I have one in my tree, but a bit earlier and I don't know anything about her except that her name was Catherine and that she m. on 29 Dec 1811 in Colchester to Hezekiah Richards Cross. they had 5 known children.

Hezekiah Ricchards Cross is my 3x great uncle. his brother Joseph Cross, Jr. is my 3x great grandfather. their parents were Joseph Cross and Elizabeth Richards.
Catherine and Hezekiah's children were
Alfred Till Cross who m. Lavinia King-they had no children
Mary Ann
Rebecca
Edward
Thomas

I know nothing at this time beyond birth dates for the last 4 children.
perhaps some of the names are from Catherine's side of the family and will help you make the connection you need.

I reckon I have to be looking for a male Till rather than female....unless it is another case of unmarried mother giving her surname to her 'out of padlock' son.

maybe I can help-if not, maybe someone else can use this.
I don't know what your little mystery is, but here's some stuff I found Googling;

Coggeshall Wills, Archdeaconry of Colchester
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~maureenbryson/coggwlls.htm

will of Samuel Frost Great Coggeshall Hairdresser;
Danl Till

will of Elizabeth Denney Great Coggeshall widow
dau Ann, wife of William Till
gson William Till

will of Nathaniel Leaper Great Coggeshall Carpenter
sisters Ann Wheeler and Sophia Till

will of David Pilkington Great Coggeshall Gunmaker
children of wife before marriage Henry Till, Esther Till

will of Mary Pickter Great Coggeshall widow
wit William Till

that's all the search found for Tills at this site.

have you tried Google or Mama? there may be something there. I put in words of interest (in this case "till colchester" (without the quotes) and add (genealogy) with the parenthesis.

Thanks for spending the time Neko...........I have seen these ones, but as far as I can ascertain they aren't linked.

I have done the Google.....fairly helpful (but in many cases it seems that the surname must have become Cash Register!)....

I will keep pounding away....

The mystery is.....someone's surname probably isn't what everyone has thought for a good many years....not uncommon, but it means that some relatives 'aren't' and someone somewhere 'is'.

those common household surnames are a headache to research. I have Cross's and if I'm not careful I get every darn church and cemetery (as well as catholic schools, etc.) out there in my search. it's not the only one. I also have a German name that is innocent looking in English, but Google it and it turns up as "silence"...which means I get all sorts of hits for The Silence of the Lambs! aargh! and the surname dictionary says it's church incense, so why it shows up as silence when I google, I have no idea.
one of my two German lines (which are on the same side of the family, my maternal line) claims they changed their surname...or the spelling of it. now one of the lines I have found the spelling changed...alot, though spoken phoenetically they are still pretty much the same, but the other surname is untraceable, and so I wonder if it's the one? well, I am in the midst of writing the Anglo-German FHS in the hopes of breaking down a brick wall, as the latter ancestry does have ties to England.
well, good luck finding your Till...who-ever they are!
