Help Please TANNER
« on: Sunday 30 October 05 22:28 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I hope someone can help me locate some information on my Tanner family.

Anne Eliza Lee (born St Thos Winchester, Hampshire, England
 circa 1847
John Tanner (born circa 1849 don't know where)

I have not yet found any record of their marriage.

Their children
Edward lee tanner (b. circa 1884)
Henry John tanner (1871)
Frank Tanner (1873)
Annie Louisa Tanner (b. 1877 Canterbury B S, New Zealand)

I have found Anne, Annie and henry in the uk in 1881

Where can I Look to find them in the New Zealand years?

Many thanks

Becky

this lot have got worse any ideas appreciated.

Tracing just the movements of Ann Eliza Tanner (nee Lee)

b. 1847 winchester
1851 census winchester
1861 census winchester
1871 census surrey
1871 married in surrey
1871 1st child born Winchetser
1873 2nd child born winchester
1874 2nd child christened winchester UK
1874 2nd child died (death record not yet found)
1877 3rd child born cantebury, New Zealand
1881 census essex UK
1884 4th child born haverhill mass USA
1891 census hackney, london. UK

Her husband was in 1891 a pastry cook and confectioner (as was his father before him)

The problems I am having is firstly tracing the NZ and USA birth, finding any sort of passenger records for the travelling they have done.
However the biggest problem I ham having is understanding why and how they travelled quite so much?   they may have managed to get assistance to get to NZ but surely would have needed money to get back again?

Has anyone any thoughts on this?

Thanks
Becky

Hi Becky,

I keep reading your posts and wondering how to help.

Firstly, I wonder if Mr TANNER, confectioner, was contracted to various employers in ENG and for the same reasons  went to CBY NZ, returned to ESS ENG then went on to MA USA before returning to Hackney LDN. There was obviously enough money, either his own or his employers, implying he was a very good chef.

A successful confectioner/pastry cook would leave surviving records wherever they went, especially if they owned their own business. Check local libraries, family history centres along their trail.

Passenger records will be problematic for all the voyages unless you happen to know the years or ports of arrival. I think they would have arrived in the USA via New York or other eastern ports.

If you've found John TANNER in any ENG census records it should give his place of birth.

I have found a NZSG Strays certificate for an Annie Louisa TANNER;
Year: 1881
Event: Birth
Event Place:Canterbury CBY NZ
Source Place: West Ham ESS ENG

Could this be her, do you think? The birth year is wrong, as you have 1877. Do you have the 1877 birth certificate of Annie Louisa TANNER?

Hi Riley,

Thanks for your thoughts on this.

I really had not thought of pursuing the records of his business - in 1891 he is listed as employer, and his father is listed as own account in 1851 so I could guess that the business was passed down.

in 1881 Annie Louisa is living with her mother in West Ham, having returned from New zealand, so I assume the strays record is from the UK 1881 census, and is indicating that her birth was NZ but the record was made in Essex.  If so that is my Annie.

I don't have the birth certificate - can anyone advise where I would be able to get NZ certificates from?

In 1861, 1871 and 1881 I have not yet found john on census returns (though Ann Eliza is there in all 3).  However on the 1851 he is listed as born marylebone amd 1891 camden town.

Anothe puzzle however I now have is John and Ann eliza both died around 1930's  according to  family memories, however 1901 I cannot locate either of them and Edward Lee Tanner  their son is in a home for working boys.
The only thing I can think is they have gone off travelling agin and left him behind.
I am hoping to find the records for the home at some point, which will hopefully give a little more info on his admission there.

I think this family are going to keep me guessing for some time yet!

Becky

Hi Becky,

You can buy BDM's from NZ Internal Affairs;
http://www.bdm.govt.nz/diawebsite.nsf/wpg_URL/Services-Births-Deaths-and-Marriages-Index?OpenDocument

Print off the form, complete it and post it with your money. They cost $26, I'm sorry to say.

Happy hunting, riley

It's a long shot but it might be worth looking at this TANNER website to see if there is a connection with the family from Boldre:

Hi Becky

It's been a long time since you posted your original message, but I have recently put a tree on Ancestry which has some details of John and Ann's family. I am interested in the Tanner line in Winchester and have got back quite a few generations on John's side. If you have any questions, please let me know.

Hi Jo,

Many thanks for letting me know about your ancestry tree - we certainly have a link between our tree's and I have sent you a PM.

Kind regards
