Southampton - James John Petty
« on: Thursday 26 August 04 10:57 BST (UK) »
Hi

I have been trying to find info on James John Petty in Kent and now my searches have revealed a James Petty possibly born in Southampton in 1878.

With help from Chalky and Rootschat, James Petty’s wife Frances had two sons Charles 1 yr and Albert 5wks.  This information came from the 1901 census and shows his age as 23 and Frances 28 and living in Chadwell St Mary Essex. James’ occupation - Dock Labourer.

Many, many thanks to Chalky and Rootschat for their website facilities.

I need to confirm whether this James Petty is the same person as James John Petty who I have been searching for in Kent.  I need to find his birth certificate to confirm his full name.  Can anyone please advise the best way forward?

Cheers, Pettyrose

Hello,
Have you tried freebmd? for the birth registration index, with that you can apply for a birth certificate.
A quick search I did revealed quite a few Petty's, one James Ashley Petty,  District Southampton, Vol  2c,   Page 41, March 1879.  If he was born in December 1878 its quite possible the birth wouldn't be registered until January 1879 - thus the March quarter.
Freebmd is not complete though so there could be others, there's no way of telling from the index if it's the right one, but when you apply for the certificate you can give other reference points, e.g. fathers name is .......
then if it' s not the right one they don't charge the full amount, or apply to the Registry Office for the District, sometimes they don't charge at all if  it's not found - or so I understand.
Good luck

Hi
I have had a look on the 1891 census to see if James Petty born Southampton had an initial added and it appears he was James A Petty, I have checked the image too.

What other information do you have on your James Petty as there are some that appear on the 1891 census born in Kent?

Let me know and I will take a look for you.

Could this be your James John Petty

Births Dec 1877
~~~~~~~~
PETTY  James John     Pancras  1b 43
He is the only one on free bmd between 1870 and 1880 although the transcripts are far from complete.
Hi
Many thanks to Newbie and Nicky for the replys to my posting with their advice.
To put you in the picture I am searching for James John Petty (Labourer) married to Frances Ellen Petty (Ne: Kemp) who were parents of William John Petty and George Petty.
All I have is William J Petty Birth Certificate giving info of the above and address as 12 Perry St Chatham Kent.  WJP born 30 Dec 1905.
James John and Frances Ellen died when William J was 10 (around 1915) but how I don't know.
George joined the Merchant Navy but died during WW1 but have no date.
I thought I had a lot of info to begin with but after searching some Kent sites and help with 1901 Census site from Chalky together with searching Cityark for Chatham and Rochester, found the surnames but can't confirm a definite find for birth death or marriage of James John Petty and Frances Ellen Petty.
Hope someone can help, and break down my brick wall.
Cheers
Hello again,
You could try the WW1 campaign medal cards to see if George is listed there, I just checked and the "P"'s are not due to be listed until September here is the link
I did a search for "navy" and some cards came up so they are listed there, you may be lucky - worth a try.
Hi,
I just realised if George died in the WW1 he should be listed on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission site, did you try this?
 I did a search for Petty, G.  Force - Navy, War - World War1,  but there were no matches.
I then did a search for Petty, G., Force - Any, War - Any,
9 results, a couple in WW1 but none in the Navy, but you may recognise something so may be worth a look, here is the link
http://www.cwgc.org/cwgcinternet/search.aspx
I realise it's not George you are primarily looking for but information relating to him may lead you to James John?
Good luck
Hi Newbie
Sorry didn't reply to you sooner, but many thanks for your help and websites.
I have searched the Commonwealth War graves commission site and did come up with some George Pettys but these were in the Royal Navy whereas the GP I am looking for was in the Merchant Navy.
I have not had chance to search the WW1 campaign medal cards but if I have any success I will let you know.
Many thanks again for your help.
Cheers
