Hi

This is a quote from your pm

Quote
OOps sorry about that.He is my grandfather, but he was 60yrs old when my mother was born(Actually think my mothers eldest sister is her real mother). She told me that he was in the Boar war,Gorden highlanders, then in WW1,WW2 he was a fire warden.Basically thats all i know of him,I've never seen a photo etc.I was told he was from the highlands.I cannot find anything about him anywhere.I have no living parents.

We would need a bit more info to be able to identify the right man.

Can you tell us when he was living in Crewe ?

Do you have a copy of your mothers wedding/birth certificate, this will give us a definate name and occupation to work with.

Was your mother born in Cheshire and if so when and where ?

please reply by clicking the reply button underneath this message

Pre WW11.His address in Crewe was 10 Banks St.I was told that he was a fire watcher in the 2nd WW,so I'm guessing he must have died middle 1950's.
His children were called,Elizebeth(Lizzy),Doris.Lilian(my mother).Son's were Harold and Charles(charlie),Son Harold died when i was young.
I have a strange feeling that he's not my mothers father.  Auntie Lizzie was 18yrs older then my mother. She went into service, didn't in those days either go into the workhouse or service if say with child?.If she is her mother then she wed the father,he was Henry Clews.Athough I'm still after Henry/Harold Machin,to me he's the grandfather I've never had/seen.

Hi

If Henry/Harold served in the Boer war then we are not likely to find him in the 1901 census, his birth date would proberbly be around 1880, there are no Henry Machins born Scotland living in the Crewe area in 1891.

If he was definatly born Scotland have you tried to look up his birth on our Scotland board. Although before asking someone to search I would recommend you find out his correct name, maybe from Elizabeth's (lizzie) birth certificate, thats if you suspect he is not named on your mothers.
