I have been researching my Lee family who emigrated to South Africa for a few years now and have been very fortunate in making several contacts who have been able to hand family stories down which has greatly helped the research.
From research here in the UK it appears that several branches of the Lee family went to South Africa in the 1890s. It has therefore been very useful to have the recently published outbound UK passengers from 1890 to 1899 online at
www.ancestorsonboard.com.
I have probably found at least four family members but the one of particular interest doesn't appear to be on these list for these dates. It therefore seems possible that they may have gone to SA later than the rest of the family.
However, family tale has it that they arrived in the port of Durban and were offloaded from the ship in a basket as the port was not fully developed at that time. Can anyone out there confirm whether this was the case or not? It might just help in narrowing down their departure year from the UK.
Many thanks
Denise
