Documents online
« on: Wednesday 17 November 04 13:18 GMT (UK) »
I have just downloaded some war medal index cards from the National Archives....... at £3.50 each......

A mistake I made...........don't do what I did !

There were two people with the same name and so I ordered both....yes, I know !....... but its cheaper than a trip to London.....

Silly me !  When I downloaded them I found that they are both on the same page......which I then got twice......and I could have just paid for the first and got both !   arghhhhh !!!

Perhaps if you contact them, and explain what has happened and asking nicely they may be able to give you a creidt for one of the downloads. It's worth asking.  ;)

Out of interest, KathyM, what did you learn from the index card you found? Are they very brief and mainly a finding aid to other sources? Or did you learn a great deal more?

There are something like six cards per image/page, aren't there?

I know it's a bit late for Kathy but I'd advise anyone using that site to read the info about how the records are arranged and if there is more then one entry for your ancestor how to check the reference numbers to see if they are on the same sheet, it might help to avoid paying for duplicate sheets.

happy hunting :)

In future I will try to read ALL the instructions !  But generally, I'm not good with things like that....I rush in !

There is very little information.....but I think they differ......I am still not sure if I have the correct person......but will use the nos. to try to find out more !
It lists the medals they were awarded and date of discharge on mine......I was hoping for a date of birth, or address, or something to help me identify him !

This was a complete waste of money as far as I was concerned as I knew all the information the cards contained.

Oh well never mind, a lot of the stuff I have ordered over the years has been a waste of money.  I must have spent a small fortune on things that were no help at all.  The last things I ordered were 4 death certificates for various people.  Only one was mine.  I daren't tell the children.  What is that acronym for people spending the kids inheritance?
