It Was From 1876. Was School Around Then?

Schools had been around from the end of the 18th Century. There was an education census in 1851.
There were the National Schools (National Society for Promoting the Education of the Poor in the Principles of the Established Church) from 1811, and the British Schools (British and Foreign School Society) from 1814.
Education became compulsory in 1870 with Forster's Education Act,although the payment of school fees was preserved. By the Act of 1891 free education became possible for all. Literacy levels had risen to about 92 per cent by 1870 and Forster's Education Act

I have several documents from Scotland which contain the words his/ her mark after the name. The reason (in my  relatives case) was that they were gaelic speakers and had come to Scotland from Ireland.  They just weren't literate in English and someone signed on their behalf.
