Sussex Lookup Requests / Re: Fittleworth Lookup
« on: Thursday 16 April 15 18:02 BST (UK)  »
Hi Lizzie,
I believe that baptism you found is correct for Charles. I found a bastardy order for a Richard Standen who allegedly deserted his wife and three children. I am assuming it is the same Richard who died the same year that it had been placed. If he was a bargeman he may have been away for his sons baptism or perhaps he was in gaol, or who knows?

The trickiest problem that I have is trying to locate records for Alice and Richards son Henry. Alice petitioned for clemency when Henry was convicted for larceny and sentenced to death. His sentence was commuted to transportation for life. I have never been able to find a baptism or birth record for him.

If I could locate transcriptions for Coldwatham, Bury and Wiseborough Green I may get somewhere I suspect. That is where his siblings and parents records draw from.

I have parish records for Coates and Fittleworth which might be helpful for your Goodger search. Private message me your email and I will send them to you.

Hi List,
Is anyone able to help me with BDM info for Richard Standen/Standing (circa 1792)and Alice Overington circa (1785) and their families. I believe their children were William, Richard, Henry, Charles, and Jane. I believe Charles married a girl named Mary and had a family living in Fittleworth up until 1861. All help appreciated.
Thanks
Kate

Hi Again Lizzie,
If you have access to the fittleworth parish records could you see if you can find a marriage for Charles Standen/Standing to a Mary in Fittleworth circa 1840. They went on to have six children per the census records  - Thomas, Charles, Henry, George, Joh, Albert. I believe Charles Snr died circa 1859.
Thanks
Kate

Hi Lizzie,
That is fantastic. My fittleworth transcriptions only go to 1811. Can you please send me any additional info from those baptisms? Do they list a birth date in addition to the baptism date? Or god parents? The Coldwatham one is certainly plausible. That would mean that the family moved around quite a bit. I believe they were married at Wiseborough green and then moved into Fittleworth. After Richards death, Alice settled in the nearby village of Coates, presumably with her children. From your 1851 census find, I was able to discover that Henry's brother Richard joined him in Australia. Not sure yet what happened to the rest of the family. Your help has been so valuable. THANK YOU.

Hi Lizzie,
Your research definitely concurs with mine. I have never seen the 1851 census info though. Where do I find that online? I wish I had more info on the Goodger/Goodyear family to share with you. My ancestor is John Goodger's wife Alice. Would love to try find a copy of that 1851 census. Can you help me with that?
Many thanks
Kate

Australia / Re: Austin Paul McDonald

Hi Cando,
Yes you are correct. I replied to the wrong thread but as Austin Paul was the son of James Francis and Mary Jane its not totally off topic. Jf and MJ were married in Tasmania 10 Feb 1886. James Reginald Lawrence McDonald was born to them in Launceston 5 Sept 1888, Austin Paul was born in 1897 in Victoria. Im assuming that Mervyn who was their eldest, born in 1887, was born in Tasmania. I have not been able to find a birth record for him. James Francis was found drowned in the Yarra River on the 12 June 1903. I have been unable to learn anymore about the circumstances of his death, albeit the family always thought it was suspicious and that he had been thrown from a bridge. I have his death certificate but do not know how to access a coroners report or inquest if there was one. I have also not been able to find any information about James Reginald. In his mothers obituary it remarks that he was living in Melbourne and refers to him as Reginald not James. Would love any help.
Kind regards
Kate

Hi All,
I am related to this family through James Francis Mcdonald. I have a lot of information about the McDonald line but very little about his three children with Mary and their descendants. I would like to make contact with family members if possible.
Kind regards
Kate

Thanks Nell, this is fantastic help. Both George and Richard are definite possibilities and both continue as family names. Thank you for your time and helpful lead!

Sussex / Pulburough look up
« on: Thursday 23 June 11 08:18 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,
I am trying to find a marriage between an Alice Overington and the father of her son Henry Standen. I believe Alice was from Pulburough. As a widower she subsequently married John Goodger in Coates 1821. I would like any references to Alice or Henry's birth, her marriage to Standen or his death. Thanks for you help!
best
