Lancashire Lookup Requests / Re: 1841 Census Lookup please.

Yay,  after much searching  finally found the marriage of James DOBER to Louisa HARRISON on the 31 Mar 1834  under the name of James DOLBER he was a bachelor living in Eccles, Manchester as was Louisa. Her father is unnamed, as most likely she was illegitimate and her father was unknown. His father is named as Thomas Dolber, occupation: Weaver. James's sister Ann Dolber is the second witness with a Thomas O Neil being the first witness.

99.99%  of the trees on Ancestry have it incorrectly as James Dober marrying Mary Kelly which we now know is incorrect.

I can't believe the number of spelling variations for the name Dober, making it so difficult to research. I have come across it spelt as
Dolber, Dobber, Daber, Deber, Dover, Dauber, Daves and Dowen, you have to be very inventive with your searches.

Great to see are still doing your family history Chanel. Amazing to see old family Gravesites, it is quite a moving experience isn't it.

I believe Ancestry has Ann Dober recorded as Ann Deber in the 1841 Census. Ann Deber/Dober is a 20 year old Servant, living in Hall St, Manchester she is born in the census county.

Ann and her husband Joseph Mammatt were witnesses to her brother James Dober's second marriage to Mary Hughes, widow of John Moscrop. James first wife appears to Louisa but I can not find a marriage or a death for her but she appears with James and their family in 1851 in St Andrews, Manchester, Lancashire as Daber. Family search has it recorded as Doler:
James Daber 30 Born on Vessel at Sea,
Louisa Daber 34 Ardwick, Lancashire,
Ellen Daber 5 Manchester, Lancashire,
William Deber 4 Manchester, Lancashire,
Thomas Deber 2 Manchester, Lancashire,

I cannot locate either of them in the 1841 Census, so any help on that would be appreciated.

I know this is an old post but just doing some research on the Dobers today and came across your post.
The children of Thomas Dober and Loveday Ferrell/Farrell/O,Farrell appear to be
Priscilla DOBER 1810–1884
Loveday DOBER 1813–
Ann DOBER 1819–
Thomas DOBER 1819–1867
James DOBER 1821–
Richard DOBER 1823–1912

The 1851 Census record is badly transcibed as:
Loveday Dowen        Mother   Greenwich, Kent
Thos Daves abt 1780   Wigan, Lancashire, England       Greenwich, Kent

as you will see Loveday's year or place of birth is not recorded but it is registered in Devon in 1783 as Lovedy Farrell O'Farrell.

Joseph and Ann Dober appear in the following census records as follows

Thanks for the great tips guys. Looks like the St Oswalds Marriage 1808 must be the one as there don't appear to be any other John and Elizabeth Kearsley having children.
 Thanks Kay

Cheshire / John Kearsley - Maltster of Chester, Cheshire
« on: Sunday 21 September 14 06:58 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,
I am looking for the marriage of John  Kearsley (Maltster/Inn keeper of Foregate St, Chester)and Elizabeth ?.  All their children appear to be born in Chester so I assume that is where they married about 1809 but I cannot find a record
Mary  Kearsley  1810 Elizabeth  John  Chester, Holy Trinity
Thomas  Kearsley  1812 Elizabeth  John  Chester, St Oswald
George  Kearsley  1815 Elizabeth  John  Chester, St Oswald
Edward  Kearsley  1817 Elizabeth  John  Chester, St John the Baptist
Thomas  Kearsley  1819 Elizabeth  John  Chester, St John the Baptist
Emma  Kearsley  1821 Elizabeth  John  Chester, St John the Baptist
Edward  Kearsley  1822 Elizabeth  John  Chester, St John the Baptist
James  Kearsley  1825 Elizabeth  John  Chester, St John the Baptist
Elizabeth  Kearsley  1826 Elizabeth  John  Chester, St John the Baptist
Charles  Kearsley  1828 Elizabeth  John  Chester, St John the Baptist
George  Kearsley  1830 Elizabeth  John  Chester, St John the Baptist
Ellen/Hellen Kearsley 1832 Chester

John Kearsley after Elizabeth's death in 1836, next married in 1840 Jane Peacock of the "Blossoms Inn", Chester. Cannot find them in the 1841 or 1851 Census and John Kearsley died 1851. Jane appears in the 1861 and 1871 census records. Edward Kearsley appears with Jane in the 1871 census as a Visitor - Wool Buyer, with stepmother Jane Peacock/Kearsley

any help much appreciated

New Zealand Completed Requests / Re: Archibald Lauder b.1814 Glasgow to Otago
« on: Tuesday 24 April 12 08:13 BST (UK)  »
Thanks for the snippets guys.
I did not know Ada was adopted so must add that to my records, thanks.

I see you have a copy of the Gregory Family history :) but believe their arrival on the ARAWA should have read ARIMA,  I have since done some research on the Lauders arrival in New Zealand and it seems that: on 25  Jun 1864,  Archibald Lauder, and his family (sons James, and Robert - not located Walter to date - from his first marriage also came to New Zealand, where James continued his trade as a baker, while Robert worked as a rabbiter),  sailed from Glasgow, Scotland for  Bluff, Southland, NZ, arriving 21 Sep 1864, (not 1863 as stated in the  Gregory Family Book) on the second voyage of the "Arima".
Sarah Lauder nee Stewart's Death notice seems to confirm the year of arrival, does the arrival of the goods, ex ARIMA for Sarah Lauder, Southland Times, Volume I, Issue 56, 8 October 1864

Southland Times , Issue 11938, 8 January 1892, Page 2
Fortrose. There passed away rather unexpectedly on Christmas Eve one of the old settlers of this district in the person of Mrs A. Lauder, who, with her husband, has been residing in this district for the past 17 years. They came to the colony 27 years ago and first of all settled at Morton Mains. Only a fortnight before her death the golden wedding of the aged couple was celebrated. She leaves a large family, all grown up, 26 grandchildren (25 of whom followed her to the grave) and 2 great-grandchildren.

Can forward you a PDF copy of what I have put together on the two voyages of the ARIMA to New Zealand, if you would like to send me a PM with your email.

The James that died at Mataura on the 10th Jan 1880 was the son of Adam Lauder and Mary Laidlaw
whereas our Archibald Lauder d. 1 Sep 1899 was the son of William(James) Lauder and Catherine Wilson
so it is not possible that they were brothers.  :-\  I do have the death certs for these two also if you like a copy.

cheers Jewelz :D

Thanks for the new info Signal

I believe Archibald Lauder was born as that, using the mothers maiden name a second name wasn't common  back in 1814. He probably took his mothers maiden name later in life as it appears on his death cert in 1899.

Archibald(senior) appeared in 1841 with his first wife Agnes(Janet) and sons( who I am struggling to find). It is possible they had second names but Robert who is the only one I can find a death for in Invercargilll (have also tried LANDER) did not. His Children from his next marriage to Sarah Stewart, all do have second names see below

They appeared in the: 1841 Census

Sarah was born on 20 Sep 1814 at Perth, Kilmarnoch, Scotland. They lived at Yardhead, Leith, Scotland where their children, Catherine Wilson, Mary McKenzie, Sarah Stewart and Archibald Wilson were born.

They appeared in the 1851 Scotland Census

Thanks so much for your help guys,
Yes the Arima looks like the correct ship. I have found the articles about the Arima thanks Lu. Makes it so much easier to look up when you have the correct info!

I believe there were three James Lauders
1. Our James was a baker in the 1851  and 1861 Scotland Census
New Zealand, Electoral Rolls, 1853-1981
1880 -1881  Age: 46 Residence   Mataura, Southland, New Zealand    Baker, next on the roll to Archibald Lauder Tois Tois, who has a house on J Mcintosh's, husband of Catherine Lauder,

He was alive at his father death in 1899 but seems to disappear after that.

2. A tailor who I think might have been the James Lauder(Dunedin Electrol Roll) on the Storm Cloud, as the is no mention of a baker.

3. A Farmer, for who I have the death cert you mention in 1880, but his parents were Adam Lauder and Mary Laidlaw and Spouse Jane Wishman, Born Kelso(not our family)

Many thanks to all of you for taking the time to look into this for me your efforts are much appreciated.

Cheers
