Hi Andrew , a welcome to a distant relative , your William McLaren and Mary Beattie are part off a well known family in terms off McLarens from Balquhidder parish , note parish which extended half way or so along Loch Earn , Comrie parish , other half.
William's sister Catharine was my 3 x g/grandmother , both my 3 x g/grandparents being McLarens.

Archibald McLaren and Margaret King , were the parents off William , they had 6 sons and 3 daughters at Easter Auchraw , Lochearnhead.

Archibald's (born 1761 - to past 1841 census) parents were John and Catharine McLaren , John from Carnlia , above Ardveich farm , and Catharine from Ardveich , daughter off Donald McLaren , the Chief in his day.
William McLaren , inherited after the death off his cousin Donald McLaren in 1880 , the chief magistrate and wool merchant in Callander , and subsequently bought  , the farm off Ardveich , however William died in 1893.
The age on his marriage to Mary is wrong , he was born in 1818 , making him 38 at marriage.

I have a huge amount on this family , with many relatives worldwide . The old house where William was born in 1818 , and all the family , is the only thatched house left at Lochearnhead.

Yours Gordon McLaren

PM me for e mail address etc

Hi Jenny , yes I can tell you much more re Archibald McLaren and Margaret King , I have a lot off information re both families.

Archibald McLaren's parents were John McLaren and Catharine McLaren , both McLarens , John was from Carnlia , a now ruined farmtown , above Ardveich farm at Loch Earn . Catharine McLaren , Archibald's mother was a daughter off Donald McLaren of Ardveich , the chief in his day. Archibald baptised 7th September 1761 , was still alive on the 1841 census , and died sometime after in the 1840s (no death record).

Margaret King , was the daughter of John King and Janet McLaren , from Castaran , next to Edinample castle at Loch Earn , Margaret was baptised 4th February 1776.

Archibald McLaren and Margaret King were married at Balquhidder Church on the 14th January 1797.

On the 1841 census , Archibald is 79 , Margaret 65 , and granddaughter listed is Margaret Bain age 5.
If you are on facebook Jenny , look for me Gordon McLaren , pic with 2 flags , send friend request . Can send you all original records.

Gordon

Hi , reading your post re Alexander McLaurin  and Grizel Campbell , i can recommend a book for you , Creag An Tuirc , by Neil McLaurin. it gives extensive history regarding many McLaren family lines.
Alexander and Grizel are in the book , with family listed , pages 285 and 286. mainly regarding the farms of Broich and Duchlage , from around 1670 on , with your Alexander's grandfather.

hope off help.   Gordon

Hi Kiwikate , think their may be another daughter to Daniel Ferguson and Janet McLaren , with the surname McLaren spelt McLeran. their is a Catharine born on 28th March 1784 , on familysearch.

had a look on scotlandspeople , and Catharine born at Wester Glentarken , just along lochside from Dalchruin.
i have many links to this area , both on paper and with dna test through Clan MacLaren society. i am related as a McLaren , too Kings , Mcintyres etc from this area.

Both my 3 x g/grandparents died at Dalchruin in 1867 of scarlet fever.

A picture of the old cottage at Dalchruin , replace tin with heather thatch on the roof , the railway line ran along the back of here , hence the change to tin , too many sparks igniting thatch roofs.

if of interest i have the link of these McLarens , back to Lochearnhead.

Helen MCGREGOR, b NOV 1850 in Muthill, Perthshire, Scotland.  No birth registration has been found for her.  She was found residing with her parents in 1851 and not in 1861.   She married on 22 MAR 1870 in Muthill, Perthshire, Scotland to Archibald MCLAREN.

1.   Peter MCLAREN, b 1870 in Muthill, Perthshire, Scotland.
2.   Elizabeth MCLAREN, b 1872 in Hamilton, Lanark, Scotland.
3.   Lillias MCLAREN, b 1873 in Hamilton, Lanark, Scotland

Archibald McLaren was the son of Peter McLaren (died October 29th 1869 , Dochlewan) and Lillias McNeil (died 25th Feb 1867 at Dochlewan , Ardoch , Muthill).

on Peter's death certificate of 1869 , his father is Archibald McLaren , the tailor , and Margaret McDonald ? this is incorrect , should be Margaret King.

on the 1851 census Peter is 35 and from Lochearnhead. Archibald McLaren was the tailor at Lochearnhead at Easter Auchraw , born in 1761 , marries Margaret King , and dies sometime in the 1840's , as he is listed on the 1841 census at Easter Auchraw , age 79.

Reason i can confirm Archibald , is the son of Peter McLaren , is the will of his aunt Janet McLaren of Easter Auchraw , residing at Ardveich on her death in 1892 , it lists them all .

Sometimes you come across a piece of information , that is a breakthrough. here is a photo from Killin cemetery of my g/g/g grandparents gravestone.
Donald and Catharine McLaren from Dalveich , both died in 1867. also listed is their son Archibald , who died 1902.
At the very bottom of the stone is this inscription. "their ancestors have been buried here for generations"
the stone next to it was erected by Patrick McLaren in memory of his father Malcolm McLaren , who died at Cambusurich (south side Loch Tay) on 13th April 1808 , aged 83.
my 5 x g/grandfather was a Malcolm McLaren , born at Cloichran to Donald and Margaret McLaren , i think that Malcolm who died in 1808 , could be Donald's brother (not old enough for father).
it does not have to be conclusive , Cloichran and Cambusurich only 1/2 mile apart.    Gordon
