Cheshire / Hyde Romily and Mellor
« on: Sunday 08 August 10 12:29 BST (UK)  »
Further to the posting I made on 28 June, I am still searching for anything more on:
WILLIAM HALLOWS b abt 1791 Romiley, Dingle and
MARTHA ? b abt 1791 Romiley, Dingle.

Question 1: Any further help or advice would be very welcome. I live in the south and can’t get to the local record offices easily. Hallows can’t be a common name.

One of their sons, John Hallows married a Hannah Ridgway in 1849 in Stockport. Thanks to the help I got through Rootsweb, particularly from HOWMUCH and VELPREMUS, I managed to trace Hannah’s parents to:
JOHN RIDGWAY b abt 1797 Mellor, Glossop, Derbyshire and
LETTICE ? b abt 1792 Mellor, Glossop, Derbyshire.

I may have a possible solution (99% but not 100% sure of this) for Lettice’s parents:
BENJAMIN HAMBLETON of Mellor and
HANNAH BARBER of Mellor, who married 29 July 1795 Glossop.

Question 2: Any comments on this - and does anyone have more information on the HAMBLETONS? I think this family went back at least a couple of centuries in Mellor.

Question 3: Through posting my tree on Genes Reunite two weeks ago, I have been having correspondence about many other member of the RIDG(E)WAY family of Mellor, who go back to at least the 1550s in the village. But I can’t get that final link of my JOHN RIDGWAY with that family. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can throw light on this part of my family.

My thanks to everyone who helped last year take my family tree back to WILLIAM HALLOWS and MARTHA ? both born approximately 1791/4 and both of whom lived most or all of their lives at Romiley, Cheshire.

Previous answers on Rootsweb give details of the 1841 and 1851 census returns.

I gather from ancestry.co.uk and elsewhere that a few other good people have managed to trace their families back to this couple but to date no-one appears to have managed to get any further back. Yet Hallows cannot be a common name. I am in contact with a number of owners of these trees and we would all be very grateful if anyone can help us go back any further.

It's possible for example that Romiley/ Ashton parish registers could throw some light but I live in the south and can't pop in to the places where these would be held. If we could trace William, and Martha's marriage then it might give some more information. Etc

Fingers crossed for some suggestions...

Hi Barbara,

I'd be delighted to share any information that I have on the Hallows and Whaley families. In fact this is the branch of my family that I have done least work on and as my wife is going abroad tomorrow for a few days, I was actually contemplating doing some more research on the Hallows line while I have a bit of spare time.

My e-mail address is (*) and real name Ian Thomson. I live in Berkhamsted, Herts. I am 59 and have been self employed for 17 years. Prior to that I used to work for BP. I am married with two boys, 24 and 20.

I have only used Rootsweb twice - once to try to track down Henry Hallows' father and grandfather (the complication was that John Hallows was married twice) and the second to find where and when I was christened, so am not really au fait with all the procedures. But your husband is right to check people out first.

My father was Donald Glen Thomson. His parents were Charles Thomson and Annie Whaley Hallows, died 19 Feb 1912. I have a little book from her funeral service. Annie was of course the daughter of Henry Hallows and Mary Ann Whaley. I have managed to go quite a long way back with Mary Ann Whaley and only recently traced (some of) her mother and father's lines back 4 generations, to a Joshua Whaley of Wimblington, d 1767 and a Robert Strickling/ Strickland who married an Anne Johnson in Jan 1808. Finding the latter connection needed hours of work at Wisbech library last year, as the records do not seem to be fully on the internet. Regarding the Whaleys, I had a lot of help from a delightful lady in the USA (Suzanne Hill), where there are lots of Whaley descendants.

I have a picture of Henry Hallows and my grandmother.

Until a few days ago worked in family Tree Maker 2005 which I got free with the Sunday Times years ago. However, I have just converted to Family Tree Maker 2008 which has a totally different file structure. I can let you have what I have done to date in either file format if this would help, or GEDCOM. Unfortunately any information on the Hallows/ Whaleys would come with hundreds of other names on the other branches. Let me know whether you would like to share any of this information.

When I was a boy my father once took me to meet a Peggy Hallows in Rothbury, Arthur's wife, who had four sons. This was after Arthur had died. I have photos of them. Are you descended from her and Arthur by any chance? I think Henry and Mary Ann's other children were Ethel, Kathleen and James...?

Great to hear from you and very best wishes
Ian

Denbighshire / My christening in ther Gresford area
« on: Tuesday 19 January 10 08:10 GMT (UK)  »
I have used Rootsweb on a couple of occasions to help with parts of the family tree and gratefully received help from members.
My mother came from Gresford in N Wales and over the years I have traced her family back to the 1500s in the nearby villages and through the Kyffin family to Einion Eifell of Cynllaith and well before that. I can let anyone interested have a GEDCOM or FTM file.
This time I have a much simpler request: I need to find my own christening date. My name is (*). I was born at (*) on 9th March 1951. I think I was christened at Gresford All Saints a few months later. My parents were living in Wrexham at the time (*) and (*).
I do not live in the area and so finding records is not as simple as poppping in to Ruthin.
My e-mail address is (*)
I wonder if any kind soul could help me?
Thanks Ian

May I thank HOWMUCH and Velpremus for answering my query so fast and efficiently. I am extremely grateful but as a new member can’t communicate directly with you to say thanks so am posting this note.

Henry Hallows is my great grandfather. I have pictures of him. I had no idea that his mother was not the same as for the other 9 children of John I managed to trace over the years. Thank you for allowing me to trace his father and mother, John and Letitia Ridgway, born around 1796. Also for finding another child of William Hallows and Martha (Nancy b c1821).

I have no idea if it would be of interest but I would be happy to send you my FTM file – it has over 1,700 names on it but it is not on any website. Perhaps it is remiss of me not sharing it. Basically my father’s father’s line goes back to before the Highland Clearances, my father’s mother links to the Hallows that you have helped with but also to the fens (1700s). My mother’s father came from Essex where we have got back to the early 1700s as well. My mother’s mother came from Wales where a cousin and I have got back to the 1500s and through a marriage a long way before that.

So thanks for the very interesting and helpful information. I guess the challenge now is how to trace the next generation of Ridgways and the next generation of Hallows before William! I live in the heathen south and can’t easily access microfiche parish records at Ashton under Lyne or – do you think that these will be available at say the Society of Genealogists in London or on the internet somewhere?

Finally, I have had a message from Redroger with the surname Stantons. I chose the identity Stantons because it has been the name of our houses for the last 20 years – it is not a family name, I’m afraid, so I do not think that I will be able to help you with your family search. Apologies.

Cheshire / Hyde and Romiley registers
« on: Saturday 28 November 09 18:03 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to trace part of my family who came from Romiley and Hyde. The usual sources like Ancestry.co.uk have not been a great help. I do not know my way around the parish registers in the area.

JOHN HALLOWS of Hyde was born around 1821 and he married ELIZABETH ? from Romiley. One of their offspring was HENRY HALLOWS b around 1850 in Romiley, my great grandfather. JOHN’s parents appear to be WILLIAM HALLOWS and MARTHA.

I would be very grateful for any help in  tracing ELIZABETH? born around 1829 from Romiley and WILLIAM and MARTHA HALLOWS of Hyde, please.

This is my first post on RootsChat.
Can anyone help?
Thanks
