Monmouthshire / James Gomer Thomas Tredegar
« on: Thursday 06 September 12 12:33 BST (UK)  »
Hello I hope someone can help in finding some information on James Gomer Thomas. While we know details of his marriage, children and death, we know little to nothing of his parents or siblings, if any.
James was born in Tredegar (Bedwellty) 17/07/1914 and believe his mother’s maiden name was Williams but we are not sure of this. He was apparently not brought up by his parents but another family called House (?). He married Catherine Elizabeth Hurlow on 9/10/1937 and they had 4 children.
James enlisted in the Army with the South Wales Borders and was transferred to the Gloucester Regiment and then to the Royal Welch Fusiliers. He was posted to India and Burma where he was killed in action on 6th May 1943.
If anyone can shed some light on James G Thomas’ parentage and childhood we would be very grateful.
Thanks in anticipation
Tinker

Hi
I hope the information below is helpfull It shows the family in Sirhowy, which is close to Dukestown and Rassa.
The below is from the 1891 Welsh Census.

1891 Wales RG12/ 4357/78 p 2

32 First Row,  Sirhowy, Tredegar

William Bevan   Head   53
Margaret Bevan   Wife   52
Thos Bevan   Son   25
William Bevan   Son   22
Ann Bevan   Daughter   17
Mary Bevan   Daughter   15
John Bevan   Son   12

William, Thomas and William Jnr are all Coal miners and Ann is a dresssmaker. All born Llangynidre.

If you want me to look further please let me know. As said by previous postings the north end of the Ebbw and Sirhowy valleys were part of Breconshire and they were therefore probably born in the Rassa area.

Happy Hunting

Hi

As previously stated Rassa was originally in Breconshire but is now in Blaenau Gwent along with Tredegar. Rassa is now spelt Rassau and is situated north of Ebbw Vale. I also have not heard of New Fawr but will have a check.

Cheers

« on: Saturday 04 June 11 21:12 BST (UK)  »
Hi I assume the people below are the one's you are looking for.

1851 Wales Census
HO107/2490/443 p 18

Twyn Blaenant (Between Nantyglo and Brynmawr ) in the parish of Llanelly

Josiah Presdee, B 1828, Bromyard Herefordshire. Head. Coalminer
Jane Presdee, B 1831 Llanelly Wife
Josiah Presde B 1841 Llanelly Son

Something a little strange in the age of the son. Census does say 10.

Hope this helps,

Monmouthshire / Look up Your Genes - BBC Radio Wales
« on: Friday 01 April 11 13:47 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Don't know if I'm allowed to promote radio programmes but a new series of Look Up Your Genes starts on Sunday 3rd April at 17.30 on BBC Radio Wales.

The radio programme, predominantly features the new heritage centre in Ebbw Vale and also the life of Eugene Cross.

BBC radio Wales is on 657 & 882AM, 0117 Sky Digital, 714 Freesat and FM 93-96 and 104. There's also BBCi Player. Hope I'm right on this.

The new heritage centre looks pretty interesting, from the ideas I've heard put forward.

Just for your information.

Cheers
