Armed Forces / British Army in India 19th century
« on: Friday 03 October 14 16:08 BST (UK)  »
I enjoyed watching Billy Connolly finding out about his army ancestors in India last night and was particularly impressed with the very detailed hospital records which were found for him.  I have two ancestors who served in India and were hospitalised more than once, although 30 or 40 years earlier than the period covered in the programme - even so, it made me wonder if there might be records of their service held somewhere other than TNA which is the only place I've checked so far. Does anyone have any idea where I might start looking?  I don't have the resources to jet off to India but hopefully their archives take email enquiries!

I found this thread very interesting as I'm always keen to fing out anything I can about my own convict.  On the link Jennaya posted to the Convicts to Australia website it states that there were musters or censuses in 1832 (2), 1833, 1835, 1836 (2), 1837 (2).  I've found my man on the 1837 muster which is widely available, and the Censuses and Musters section of the same website states that the 1833 and 1836 censuses have not survived, but there is no mention of 1832 and 1835 there.  Does anyone know where I might be able to find out more about these two?

There's always Tracing Your Roots on Radio 4.  Not on at the moment but plenty of previous programmes available on the BBC website.

If you want more detailed information and are able to visit TNA then try the Valuation Office field books of 1911 - a modern Doomsday book.  There is a description of it on the Federation of Family History Societies' website under News for 2 Feb 2013.

Best wishes

Hi Jill

I've been to TNA dozens of times researching my Yorkshire ancestors and have found all sorts of interesting stuff.  What exactly are you looking for? "Legal documents" is rather vague but they certainly have plenty of those!

Best wishes

Hi Jo

Did you know that all West Riding parish registers, including Birstall, are on Ancestry now? If you don't have a subscription you may be able to use it at your local library, that's what I do.

Good luck with your search.

Hi Paul
If someone was born in Kirkby Overblow, then as a rule they would have been baptised in Kirkby Overblow. As you can see from the Genuki website page which Pels sent you, the Kirkby Overblow registers start in 1647 and these are on Familysearch. Obviously any registers which may have existed before this date have not survived, although there are a few Bishop's Transcripts dating from 1632.  You won't find any registers dating back to 1512 anywhere in the country as they were not introduced until 1538, although some parishes resisted beginning a register until well after this date.  Hope this helps.

Thanks for the tip Judith, I'll remember that.  Unfortunately it didn't work this time.  I still can't think what the problem is, but I really appreciate you taking the time to help.
Best wishes
