Down / Re: Hedley / Headly Surname in Newtownards

I am eager to find the maiden name of 'Isabella Hedly' who was listed in the 1841 census of Newtownards as being a widow of Mill Street (the entry has survived thanks to the Old Age Pension claims).  Isabella and her late husband 'Allen Hedly' had several children born in Newtownards between 1820-1836 and I am hoping that someone may perhaps have come across a baptismal entry in one of the local churches for this couple which might give her maiden name.  After her husband's death in the mid-1830s she seems to have had two illegitimate children called James Brown and Kyle Brown.  Again, if a baptismal record for these two boys survives it might hopefully mention what Isabella's maiden name was.

Jane Hedley was baptised 30 June 1823 in St Mary's Parish Church Comber, parents Allen Hedley and Isabella Browne, no address or date of birth recorded. Allen's likely brother Henry lived at Ballyloughan outside Comber on the lower slopes of Scrabo. Kyle and James Brown were born after Allen Hedley died about 1836 but must have been raised as Hedley like her other children. They probably never knew.

Aye Davey that's my belief too both Johns were Weavers and sons of William (farmer) and yes it is probably the William who was married to Susan Perry but who knows. John Hedley and Ellen Cowan were married St Marks Ards 24 April 1854. Witnesses William Anderson and James Galbraith. John was resident of North Street then.

Hi guys I am related to John Hedley 1828  brother of Kyle and my ggg grandfather.
He became an owner of a linen mill in Thomas st Newtownards and he had a son who I have been unable to find but his son Allan (john's grandson) took over the business. Alan had a son named (you guessed it ) Alan who had 2 sons, my father George  and Stanley. In 1958 Alan migrated to New Zealand. If you would like to know more please let me know.

Hi I am Peter Hedley with family from Newtownards and have been trying to make sense of all the Hedleys in Newtownards (and connect them) for about 30 years. With little success unfortunately. Along the way various families have built up.
I have your Hedleys coming down from a John Hedley born in 1833 and married in 1859 to Annabella Finlay. Known children to me are James  1867-70, Jane b.1871 and Allen 1875-1917. This John was a Weaver from Thomas Street at marriage in 1859 and still a Cotton Weaver age 74 in 1901 and still in Thomas Street. Thomas Street had many Weavers houses.

I have the John Hedley born 1827/8 joining the Army at 19 with his brother Allen and going to Canada after the Crimea with the Army and staying there.

This could all be wrong. How good is your info?

Harper Crawford Porter  was my husbands grandfather. harpers daughter Harriett was his mum.

Hello DLW since I posted this I  have come a long way and part of what I found is that my mother had it wrong this is not Harper but Thomas. You would know Linda Hayes, also grandchild of Harper she and I made great progress with the Porters DLW . I assume she is probably your husband's aunt?

Thanks for that Csquid
Here is what I now know of that family

Henry Hedley's known children:
Margaret
Andrew
Joseph
William (my GG grandfather)
Robert

********************
            Robert's known children:
            Isabella
            William John
            Mary
            Joseph

             William's known children:
               Robert
               Joseph (my G grandfather)
               Jane
               Thomas
               Agnes
               Isabella
               Anna
               James
******************************
                              Joseph married Ann Jane Maitland
                                  children:
                                Robert 1872
                                John (Jack) born 7 7 1876 according to a
                                    granddaughter Sylvia
Then Ann Jane married a James Hedley (born Ireland) who seemed to have been boarding with them when Joseph died between 1875 and 1880

James son of William, family tradition has it, "went off to Australia or somewhere when young" but I would lay money he is the one who married his cousin's widow.
James and Anna had 8 children, 1st named Joseph

If you know more do tell

Hi everyone ;)

Just to let you know that the foregoing quest is now COMPLETED, in no small part due to Rootsweb and the leads I found here.

All above people are indeed connected to each other and, thankfully, to me.

For info of any concerned or their descendants here is a skeleton of the family as now stands;

Henry Hedley, b abt 1780
Known children Robert 1815,  Andrew 1828,  Joseph 1831, William 1834 All went to Cumberland except William

Robert married Catherine Kirk
known children Isabella 1839, William John 1841, Mary 1846, Joseph 1849. All went to Cumberland c1870

Andrew  married Eliza James Booman in Ireland then went to Cumberland soon after
               known children John 1846, Henry 1849, Henry 1851, Eleanor & Isabella 1854, James 1858, Elizabeth 1861, Joseph 1866

Joseph married Anna Frew in Ireland then went to Cumberland soon after
               known children Margaret 1858

William married Isabella Campbell
                children Robert 1853, Joseph 1855, James 1857, Jane 1860, Thomas 1862, Agnes & Isabella 1865, Anna 1867.

William also went to Cumberland with Robert c 1870 but returned.
His son Robert went soon afterwards and did not return and it is thought son James also went if he was the James who married his(James') cousin Joseph's widow, Ann Jane Maitland.

All enquiries welcome
 :)

sarah toland was born at crew hill, lisburn to William Henry Toland and Frances Kennedy. Frances was born at Knocknadona, Lisburn and there are records of various Tolands and Kennedys in that area south of Glenavy. Don't have enough info to connect them but I suppose probably connected alright, haven't really went into that line properly yet.
There are lots of Porters all over the place and this is part of the problem. Thanks for the help anyway,
peter  ;)
