Hi Ian we must be related aswell then??I cant place you at the moment??please enlighten me? .

Cathay,

I started this thread several years ago, and we have corresponded on and off over that time.  As mentioned, I'm Phoebe Sanders' grandson.  The kick starter I had to researching my family tree was when I was on holiday in Devon, and my Dad said to go to Stibb Cross and see what it looks like now.  Driving up some narrow road, I followed a truck, and on the back of that was P.M. Sanders!  Given the name and given the location, it seemed as if there could have been a family connection.  Following that name up with the hauliers register gave me name Paul Moses Sanders.  Now that's not a common name!

Regards

Ian

I have 1911 census living van horwood downs frithelstock great torrington . Children named includes my grandfather Christopher sanders age 5 newton tracey devon any other info on sanders family
jenny
pl please

Hello Jenny.

If you're looking at the 1911 census, then it would appear that you're my second cousin.  Your grandfather Christopher was my grandmother Phoebe's younger brother.  From the information I have, there were four more children born after this census was taken.  Genty in 1911, Louie in 1918, Henry in 1915, and Edward in 1918.

My grandmother Phoebe - line 3 on the census, married Noah Hughes and had two children, Harriet (named after her mother) and Edward - my father, named after her youngest brother.  Incidentally, Christopher and Phoebe's brother Moses - line 4 on the census, appears to have married Noah's sister Polly Hughes.

I believe that there are still Sanders' living around the Stibb Cross area.

Cathay is the fount of all knowledge as far as I'm concerned, but feel free to get in touch if you like.

All the best

Ian

Sorry Cathay, I won't be around for a while.  Parents aren't too well health wise at the moment, and so I would prefer to stay close if I can.

We should definitely meet up at some time though.

The Common Room / Re: Where to start?

Thanks for that, I'll start there.  My problem is that there is usually quite a bit of documentation when passengers are involved, but not a lot when a member of staff dies.  I'm not sure how involved the Railway Inspectorate got when something like this happened.  When an accident happens now, the health and safety people are all over you like a rash, but I suspect they wouldn't have been so then.

My great grandfather, Ernest William Wood, was killed on the railway on 30th October 1928.  From a combination of the death certificate and family folklore, I understand he was a track worker - what would now be called a Permanent Way Ganger.  He lived in Stratford (East London) and was employed on the LNER.

I don't know the location of the accident, but I wouldn't imagine it would be too far from Stratford, this being a major centre of that railway.

I would like to get a copy of the accident report.  What with nationalisation, privatisation and fragmentation of the railways, would anyone know where to start?

Many thanks

Ian

Travelling People / Re: Interesting traveller names!

I have an Ocean in my past.

I have done a bit of further digging, and it was not an uncommon name in the 19th Century.  Girls who were born at sea (because of the long voyages around the Empire) were often called Ocean.

Quite why the mainly landlocked Romanies used the name is another question though!

Cathay,

Just a quick question.  Do you have any information as to where the Sanders family would have come from in Sussex?

I was wondering if they may have been travelling with some Sussex / Kent Penfolds around the Uckfield to Tunbridge Wells area - just a thought

Thanks for the offer Cathay.  I do need some time to draw up the tree as it stands at the moment.  I've got to take it down to the family for Christmas.  So I'll pass on that for the time being.

Many thanks

- Ian
