Suffolk / Re: William & John Limmer, Tuddenham Saint Mary

Hi Windy
Thank you so much for all the extra info. I started our Limmer research over 20 years ago & when I found out that my cousin was also researching I passed on most of my findings to him. In 2000 I visited Tuddenham & was given the name of lady in the village who was a local historian. She sent me lots of info about the Limmers & their involvement with the mills. I remember contacting her again & querying the Thomas Limmer who supposedly took out insurance on the mill/s. I have just found a card from her in my paperwork in which she says 'I confess that the mill info including Thomas Limmer owner of the mill in 1788 was passed on to me by a member of the Suffolk Mills Group & I haven't verified it'.
So it seems we don 't have a mystery man & somewhere along the line William morphed into Thomas.

We don't think John Limmer (the son) continued as a miller. He married at Mildenhall in 1816 & the last reference we have found for him is in 1821, a farmer at Wilde St, Holywell Row, Mildenhall when all his livestock, farming equipment etc are to be put up for auction. The reason given ' he is declining business'. We don't know when he died; his wife (widow) died in London in 1840.
I will pass all your info on to my cousin.
Many thanks

Hi Windy
My cousin had just a few copies of his book printed for the family.
Quotes from his book.
'There were three mills in Tuddenham, two windmills and a water mill. The Marquis of Bristol owned the land that the watermill stood on ,although the Limmers owned the mill and leased the land. The second mill was a smock mill marked on Hodskinson's map (1783) about two miles from the watermill on the main road just outside Little Barton. The third, a wooden clad post mill about half a mile from the watermill on the Barton Mills road.'

'William Limmer insured "the goods in trade at the watermill" and "his windmill built and boarded"
for £100 on 9th April 1776. (Royal Exchange insurance records)'

We then have a Thomas  Limmer (we don't know how he is related) insuring the windmill in Tuddenham in 1788 & again on 4th Nov 1795.(Royal Exchange insurance records)

An article from the Bury & Norwich Post 12th/13th October (my cousin has omitted to put in the year but it follows on from the 1795 note about insurance) 'a certain sailcloth belonging to William Limmer was stolen. William Limmer offers two guineas for information leading to conviction of these villainous fellons'

A few other bits which could be followed up.
Thomas Limmer still involved with the watermill in 1801.
The lease ran out on the watermill in 1801 which maybe why William Limmer was building a new mill at Little Barton.
My cousin thinks that the watermill was later bought or re leased from the Marquis of Bristol by a Thomas Steel (died 1838) who passed it on to his son Thomas Steel who converted the mill to steam in 1844.
Hope some of this helps.

HI Windy
The Limmers at Tuddenham were my ancestors. John Limmer was the son of William & John Branwhite was William's son in law.
Excerpt from William's will dated 1801 ' All that my windmill now erecting and building, situate, standing & being in the parish of Little Barton otherwise Barton Mills in the county of Suffolk with all the hereditaments & appurtenances to the same appertaining or belonging as (this is underlined) when complete and finished.'
The mill along with all William's other properties were to be sold & monies divided up between William's 4 surviving children.
My cousin has written a book about our Limmer family & he has made several references to the mills at Tuddenham.

Just found this site. hope the link works.

If you get the marriage details then you will know if William was a widower & the same for Frances but this marriage is to early to get her maiden name.

Not sure about that, if someone can find more details for Frances GROVE  ???

If she was married before then her surname GROVE is her married name :-\

Muffin

Hi
Not easy when you don't know if Grove was her maiden or married name. Very few sites where you can search on first name only. I can't seem to pick up on Harriet & Sarah after 1841 but I have only been looking for Grove & not Riddle.

I'm wondering if Frances Grove was a widow when she married William Riddle & the Harriet age 15 & Sarah age 14 were her children from a previous marriage.
