Thanks to you both for replying. In particular Junev. I failed to spot that in the Family search site, it seems that the page doesn't load properly in Firefox whereas in IE I picked it up straight away.

I'm off out now but shall go back and thoroughly look at that entry again.

Many thanks again.

Cornwall / The Disappearing John MAY - born 1817
« on: Tuesday 02 November 10 16:41 GMT (UK)  »
My grt, grt grandfather John May, born 1817, appears in the Census returns for 1851, 61 & 71. I can be sure that these entries are my grt x2 grandfather as his children follow correctly including another John, my grt grandfather who can be found in the 1881, 91, 1901 & 1911 Census returns.

With so many John Mays in the 1841 Census born about 1817 I cannot be sure which, if any, is my relative. Especially as I have no idea as to his parents and from the 1851 Census unless some children died in the previous 10 years he had no children in 1841.

I'm just wondering if any of the children I have found for John 1817 could be in someone else's search results which may lead me the missing bits I'd like to find.   ???  He was quite prolific, with 9 children:

Emma J May   b 1846
Joseph   1848
John       1850 (my grt grandfather)
Elisabeth   1851
Benjamin   1853
William S    1855
Charles      1857
Edward      1860
James        1861

Hello Jennifer,

Many thanks for that piece of information. I've only just taken out some credits with FindMyPast and haven't learnt all the tricks yet.  I obviously need to take a "wider view" of things and not be so specific.

Does look as though I'm climbing up the wrong tree.  :'(  Unless my grt, grt grandfather found a way to be in 2 places at the same time!!!
Never mind.  Thank you again.

Hello Carole,

Thank you for replying so quickly. How did you find that? When I entered the details in FindMyPast it comes up with nothing found.

I'm trying to pin down my grt (x2) grandfather Archibald Elliot.  I have found Archibald Elliot in the 1871 through to 1901 Census. The 1871 1881 & 1901 entries are definitley the same Archibald. The 1891 could be a different one (place of birth is different from others) but I "feel" it is the same person. The reason for this is that my grandfather, Archibald Elliot Parkinson, was living with his grandfather (this Archibald Elliot) at that time as his mother had just died.
I've a hunch that Archibald Elliot moved up to Newcastle upon Tyne to look after my grandfather.
What I need to find out is - in 1901 Archibald Elliot was living at 2 Boarded Cottages, Dorking, Surrey with children of various ages. I need to find that address in the 1891 Census just to see if any of the individuals from 1901 were there then (I think that makes sense). I cannot find the address using the address search in FindMyPast for 1901 even. Has anyone any suggestions as to why I cannot find this address or what I am doing wrong?
I understand of course that I could be barking up the wrong tree completely.

Census and Resource Discussion / Re: Census v Army Records birth date conflict

First of all thank you to both of you for taking the time to reply. It is much appreciated.
Shropshire Lass, all I know (from his army papers) is that he was born in Liverpool. His father was also born in Liverpool and his name was Thomas too (didn't make it easy did they!). There is a Thomas on the LDS site that had a son Thomas who was baptised on the 27th July 1856 in Liverpool. The mothers name is shown there as Ellen. I fear I'll never be able to pin this down for certain. I don't have a subscription to any site just credits for FindMyPast but all I've found there is a Thomas born between Jan and March 1856. Although his age is shown on the first page of the attestation as 18yrs & 10 mths on the second page of the same paper it is listed as "apparently 19".

I'm most definitely losing sight of the trees for the wood - or is it the wood for the trees!!!

Census and Resource Discussion / Census v Army Records birth date conflict
« on: Saturday 23 October 10 16:34 BST (UK)  »
I have something of a conflict with my great grandfathers age (Thomas Parkinson). On his military service record he joined the army (Proceedings on Attestation) in January 1875 and his age was shown as 18 years and 10 months. That would make his birth in March 1856. But in both the 1901 & 1911Census returns his age is shown as 44 & 54 so his birth year would be 1857.
I can find a birth record on BMD & FindMyPast for March 1856 but nothing for 1857. Before sending for the March 1856 birth cert. I thought I'd ask those with more experience which is likely to be the most accurate date?

David
P.S. There is no trace of a 5 yr old Thomas in the 1861 Census or a 15 yr old in the 1871 Census.

World War Two / Service Record Promotion Details. Help!!
« on: Tuesday 20 July 10 11:50 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if someone could help by explaining the following for me:
From the London Gazette I have various promotion details for my father's army service during and after the 2nd World War.

1) In 1959 he was promoted from Major to Lieutenant Colonel on the Empire List (1). What is/was the Empire List?

2) In September 1961 - quote from the Gazette - Lieutenant Colonel from Empire List (1) to be Lt Col (Empire List (1)) retaining his present seniority - Exactly what does this mean?

3) Then on the 13th October 1961 - Lieutenant Colonel (Empire List (1) to be Supernumerary to Establishment

4) Then in September 1963 he was appointed from the Empire List (1) to the Special List. What is/was the Special List?

Finally, and this will no doubt sound very silly and naive of me to many, my father's service number does not appear to be exclusive to the Army. It also exists in the RAF. Was that common practise?

A lot of questions I know but they will help me to build a better picture.

David
