Hi Mike,

Thank you very much for the baptism records and the link to the transcriptions.  I wasn't aware that they were available online.  The information is of great help and will lead me on to more research.

Regards,

Derek

Channel Islands Lookup Requests / Bailey - St Helier
« on: Sunday 15 August 10 03:13 BST (UK)  »
Could someone please help with information on the Bailey family, who were in St Helier from the 1841 to 1861 censuses?

I have a James Bailey, cord-wainer/shoemaker and wife Jane in the 1841 and 1851 Censuses.  I am particularly interested in finding out the maiden name of Jane, which could be shown on the children's birth records.

Children of James Bailey from the censuses are

William born C1840
John b. C1842
James b. C1844
Joseph b. C1847
Edward H. b. C1855
Hannah b. C1856
James b. C1858
Mary A. b. C1859
Stephen b. C1861

In the 1861 census James is shown as a widower with a one month old son Stephen, which suggest that Stephen's mother may have died early in 1861.  Stephen's mother's name may or may not have been Jane, as James is supposed to have married three times and could have conceivably remarried between the 1851 and 1861 censuses.

I would greatly appreciate any information on this family.

Hi Trapper,

I am unable to reply with a PM at this stage, as I do not have enough posts on Rootschat.

My gr gr grandfather was James Bailey.  In the census his place of birth is given as Fordingbridge and by his age in the census he would have been born about 1816.  That fits fairly nicely with the James Bailey above baptised in 1815.

I also have a copy of a letter from an M Tiller (probably Matilda Tiller nee Bailey), which I believe is written to James Bailey's wife and daughter and which addresses them as Aunt and Cousin.  This would appear to indicate that James and Mary Bailey were brother and sister.

I also have one of James Bailey's marriage certificates in which he indicates that his father is Henry Bailey  (which may or may not give a clue to Mary's father, depending on whether the name was made up).

At the moment I am looking around for any pieces of the jigsaw that might help take me back a little bit further with this family.  I look forward to hearing from you.

Regards,

DerekMac

Hi Trapper,

I have Bailey ancestors from Fordingbridge and believe they are related to your Baileys.  I would be interested in sharing notes.
