I'm not too familiar with the area, but I've found Folly Farm on this map, if that is of any use - you can zoom in/out and also overlay the present day map. https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=16.5&lat=51.41609&lon=-1.69962&layers=178&b=1
The only other piece of information I can offer (if you're not already aware) is that Mildenhall is pronounced "Mynall"!

These maps are always useful - you can use the slider to switch between old and current maps https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=17.5&lat=52.24186&lon=-0.88578&layers=168&b=3

If the school was in or near Landguard Road, the spelling was probably the same - might help with online searches!

Wiltshire / Re: Village Correct Spelling
« on: Tuesday 14 April 20 15:28 BST (UK)  »
Having lived fairly locally (Salisbury) for many years, I have only ever seen this place spelt with a Y. So I had a look at the old maps, and found that in the SW England OS 25 inch 1873-1888 maps it is indeed "Chamberlain". However, all subsequent editions show it with a Y. They must have decided it was more up market!
On a historical note for those not familiar with the area, the area of Compton Chamberlayne and Fovant (the next village) was a vast military encampment in WWI. The regimental badges carved into the chalk downs overlooking  the villages are very famous, and although some have been lost those remaining are restored and well worth a visit.

I find this site useful for maps:
 https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=5&lat=56.0000&lon=-4.0000&layers=1&b=3

You set your background map to your preferred choice (I use Bing Hybrid to show street names), when you zoom in to the required area you can choose which old map to use (some areas have larger scale than others) - then use the slider to fade between the old and new to compare any area.

Technical Help / Re: Mobile Phone-"Private Number".
« on: Wednesday 05 December 18 15:34 GMT (UK)  »
There are apps available which will not only block individual numbers, but also callers who have withheld their number. You can also block calls from anyone not in your Contacts.

However, we have found that typically hospitals and doctors' surgeries when calling us withold their numbers, presumably because they do not want their direct line numbers made known to all and sundry, so there are drawbacks to using such things.

Thank you to all who replied to my question re CWGC - Imber, I agree that the d.o.b. is not shown on  headstones, but where it is known I think the person's age is shown.
I was thinking that if they are satisfied as to his age at death and add it to their records, his age may be added to the headstone in the long-term future when it is next re-engraved or replaced.

Good luck with your query STG, probably worth contacting them again.
Sorry to hijack your thread.
