Hi All

Thanks for the suggestions for the blank cause of death column.  Have been informed by another family connection that it was a suicide caused by post natal depression.  Very sad.

Hi All

I wonder if anyone can shed some light on a query for me.  I have a registration of a death for Mary Thomson ms Meikle age 27 at Birniebog, Lesmahagow, where no cause of death, duration of illness or name of medical attendant is noted.  I originally thought that she had died in childbirth but her son was born 8 months prior to her death.  She died in November 1867 and I wondered if there was any way of finding out if there had been a report of her death in the local press.  She came from a well established farming family of the area - her father being William Meikle and her mother Margaret Meikle ms Stewart and she was married to Alexander Thomson Jr, blacksmith, Damhill Smithy, Corehouse, Lesmahagow.

I would be very grateful for any information as I live in Australia and only have access to online resources.

I have Ann Jane Farley, daughter of George Farley, farmer of Glassdrummond, Co Armagh born 1852 and died 1913.  I think she had a sister Sarah M Farley and a brother William A Farley.  Ann Jane married John McLoughlin in 1878 and lived with him at Carrowmoney, Co Armagh.

Do any of these names have a connection with your Farley family?

Hi GrandpaT

Just found your post today.  Your Alexander Thomson is my Great Great Grandfather.  He had an illegitimate son, James Gladstone Thomson born 1872, with Jane Gladstone.  She was working as a servant at a farm just down the road from the Damhill Smithy.  I have also been in contact with another of his descendants through his legitimate son Alexander Thomson married to Mary Heggison.  I live in Australia now having moved here from Scotland in 1978.  The other descendant was born in Australia and it is through her mother that the Scottish connection comes from.

Funnily enough we only just recently found out that when he left Scotland he moved to Swindon and that he was working as a spring maker for the railway and had married Rosa and had children - four boys.  We had both been searching for him for ages and couldn't find out where he had disappeared to.

How are you related to Alexander?

I have not really used this site before so I am not sure how to go about finding out what information you already have and what you would like to know about Alexander.  However, it is getting quite late here and I will need to get back to you tomorrow.

Armagh / Churches in Armagh

Hi, I am new to RootsChat and I have a query I hope someone can help with.

I am trying to find the Church that my husband's family would have gone to.

We have an extract of entry in the register of marriages:

Registrar's District of Armagh
1878, Marriage solemnized in the First Presbyterian Church at Armagh in the Parish of Armagh in the County of Armagh
Between John McLaughlin - Farmer - Carrowmoney, Parish of Mullabrack - father, Alexander McLaughlin, Farmer
Ann Jane Farley - Glassdrummond - father, George Farley, Farmer

That sounds pretty categorical doesn't it.  But there are some other confusing details.  In the 1911 census the family are recorded as Church of Ireland.  They lived in the Townland of Carrowmoney in the parish of Mullaghbrack, sub district of Markethill.  I have found Church of Ireland churches for both Mullaghbrack and Markethill.  I think I have ruled out the first and second presbyterian churches of Markethill because it has marriage and birth records online covering a number of years and my family are not mentioned.

We will be in Ireland early next year, on holiday from Australia and would really love to find out more about the family.

Can anyone shed any light on what would have been the nearest Church for the family to attend.

Looking forward to hearing from anyone.

Linda
