Scotland / Re: Alexander Muirson & Margaret Urquhart
« on: Tuesday 01 February 22 11:30 GMT (UK)  »
I have the birth record from Scotlands People of Margaret Muirson. It is in the Parish of Avoch.
"Birth Nov 19 1832 Bap Nov 22 Muirson Margaret (illegitimate) father Alexander Muirson Kinkell farmer mother Margaret Urquhart."
Alexander appears to play no further role in Margaret's life as her mother always remains Margaret Urquhart and he is never in any of the census records with the family.
In  Margaret Muirson's marriage record in 1873  Alexander Muirsonis referred to as her father deceased.

I have found the 1808 marriage record in Avoch on Scotlands People for Thomas Muirson Mason and Jane Mackenzie Nat. Dr. of Sir Hector Mc. of Gairloch. Future residence said to  be Seatown.( meaning Seatown of Avoch)
All the earler records I have found lead back accurately to this record so Eleanor Rigby is correct in claiming this is her ancestor..

Family History Beginners Board / Re: William John Williams
« on: Thursday 20 July 17 05:09 BST (UK)  »
Hello Chris, Your posting is fascinating to me because although I knew nothing of William till reading this I have a family tree going back to the late 1700's for his second wife Jessie Ann Richie on her Mum's side. Her mother was Margaret Cowie born Portgordon 26 April 1877 and her mother was the younger sister of my Gt Grandmother Annie Cowie. Their parents were Alexander Cowie ' dodel' born Portgordon and Jane Morrison born Nether Dallachy. Jessie Ann had an older sister Jane Morrison Ritchie and two older brothers Frank and Alexander. I could never find a marriage or death record for Jessie Ann as I was looking on Scotlands People but did not think of her being married in England. Your question has helped me find information on Jessie Ann. I can pm you more information on Jessie Ann's ancestors if you need it. Best regards Ann

Thank you very much James. Because of your information I was able to find both deaths on Find My Past. The image showed both Alexander Patience and Hugh Fraser on page of deaths at sea and I noticed Alexander had first been recorded as Alexander Jack which was crossed out and then Patience written so this must have been an indication of the confusion that existed between the several reports I had read. I have the birth and death records of that George Patience who was rescued but had not realised he was the person involved. The other George I was hoping it might be  married  Mary Sutherland daughter of Donald Sutherland and Jean McIntosh on 19 Feb 1848 in Avoch and in 1851 she was on the Avoch census with their daughter Catherine aged 2 and was named as a 'sailors wife'. By the 1861 census she was a widow living with her daughter at 1 Dunbar street Hopeman. In 1864 she married Donald Main and never returned to Avoch. As it said 'sailor' rather than 'fishermen for George I suppose he could have died anywhere but was hoping that Fowlis incident maybe was him. The other George Patience I am chasing the death of was on the 1871 Avoch census aged 55 with his wife Margaret and family but by his son George's marriage in Oct 1873 is deceased. I have never found a death record for him despite wasting numerous credits. All my George Patiences seem to be disappearing men  . :)

I have read accounts of the loss of this Inverness registered schooner on the Herd Sands and am interested to know if the crewman George Patience mentioned in these articles died or not. One account had him saved others said that he drowned. Also I am trying to find out if he was from Avoch as I have been looking for a George Patience who was alive in the 1851 census but had died by the 1861 census which was in April that year. There is no death for him on Scotland's People so a death in English waters without a body being recovered may explain that. Also one article named another crew member who was lost as Alexander Jack while others said Alexander Patience. Could anyone shed more light on this please?

Ross & Cromarty / Re: Jacobite Donald Gollan of Avoch transported 1747

I don't know if it is of any help but in my Avoch family line there is a Donald Jack 'ree' and I found that he married a Janet Ross on 13 April 1797. Janet was born 10 Nov 1773 and her mother was an Ann Gollan married to an Alexander Ross. No further details unfortunately owing to the records being very sparse back that far.

Hi. You may have already found this out by now as it was 2 years ago you last posted . I have the page from Scotland's People with Donald Sutherland and Janet Manson's marriage record 5 Oct 1832. Janet's father was said to be 'David Manson fisher in Cromarty'.  Intermarriage between the two villages was frequent.

FH Documents and Artefacts / unknown seaman's photo
« on: Friday 18 May 12 01:44 BST (UK)  »
I would be very grateful if someone could tell me exactly what type of document this photo is from. I presume it is from some kind of seaman's registration card.
I found this photo among my Grandmother's papers and a cousin has found it among her late father's papers also but neither of us know who he is.
My main question is would the name A Smith written across the front be his name or is it the signature of someone authenticating the photo.
All our ancestors were either Scottish fishermen or merchant seaman.
Both my cousin and I live in Australia so it has obviously been sent to our parents or Grandparents by the same family member in Scotland some years back. Any advice at all would be welcome.

Hi,
I too have had big problems with the new site. I found that eight of my viewed images had disappeared. The record of the searches are still there but it now says 'no image'. Every one that went were Morrisons from St.Ninian's Tynet. Also when I tried to search more Morrisons at St.Ninians Tynet under other categories of the RC records all I got was a useless page of jumbled lines.
Brightsolid's replies to my many emails using their contact forms were either unanswered or were an automated response that did not cover the issue I was having. Finally after days a real human at GROS got onto me and  explained that there is a problem with all St.Ninian's Tynet records , even the births that were there before are now missing. I was refunded all the credits and advised not to search that Parish again until it is fixed but of course Brightsolid don't even admit there is a problem so I have no idea how I will know if it has been fixed.
I was able to download a birth to replace one of the missing ones because the child had also been registered at Fochabers RC church so that indicates the problem is in certain batches of records.
Any searches that are not the RC ones are also working fine.
I am also having that annoying problem of being told I am logged out when I'm not but that at least can be fixed by logging in again.
It would be very handy if Brightsolid had to post a list of all records that have been found to be faulty or missing images so people don't waste money and then a notice to say when it is repaired.
 All the best Ann
