Thanks for that, tmr.  I had most of it and can get no further back!  Have you thought that perhaps the info you have could have mistaken the brides' fathers' names?  I have found a few mistakes on certificates when names have been spelt wrong or even the wrong name has been inserted.  Good luck

Thanks Carrie for the links - will search through them.  My family were not miners - the Andrew Christie who died in 1865 was a farmer at Hatchbank, his son Andrew was a Carter, who had John who was a baker in Kirkcaldy, who had Andrew who became a master baker in Edinburgh, who had my father, Adam.
I am, though, very interested to see that you have an O'Hare connection.  My paternal grandmother was Ellen O'Hare who was born in Edinburgh to Edward O'Hare (born in Ireland, but where I don't know) and Alicia Sands (also born in Ireland).  I am 90% sure Edward came over and worked in Lanarkshire for a while before settling in Edinburgh.  Any connection here?  Nice to hear from you.  Regards

Ireland / Re: Edward O'Hare - Sands, Doyle, Boyle - Ireland & Edinburgh
« on: Thursday 01 April 10 13:47 BST (UK)  »
Hi there, I suspected it would not be easy!  The only other information I have is that John O'Hare (or O'Hara sometimes) was dead by 1865, (place unknown) and that Mary Boyle died in Edinburgh in 1861 aged 76 (born c1785).  According to death cert her parents were John Boyle and Mary Corachan.  My only chance could be that these names appear in someone else's family tree.
Belfast was mentioned but that could take me down completely the wrong road - but it may be something to try.  Thanks for help.

Ireland / Edward O'Hare - Sands, Doyle, Boyle - Ireland & Edinburgh
« on: Wednesday 31 March 10 23:09 BST (UK)  »
Hi there
Am looking for more details on my great grandfather Edward O'Hare.  Family thinks he came initially from Northern Ireland but .. not sure. Don't know his birth date (must be around 1830) and first certain info I have is his marriage in Edinburgh in 1850 to Elizabeth Loudon.  They had 6 children and Elizabeth died in 1863 aged 34.  Edward went on to marry my great grandmother, Alicia Sands (also born in Ireland) whose parents were John Sands and Mary Doyle.  My grandmother, Ellen, was born in 1867.  Edward's parents were John O'Hara and Mary Boyle. Would be great if someone out there knows more.  Thanks.

Thanks for that - I know that my g-grandfather Timmin(s) was a farmer but it could be a family connection.  Will try to find out.  How difficult would it be for you to scan the photograph and attach it? Will try to find out how far Bailieborough is from Cootehill.  Thanks again.

They were both probably RC.  The story in the family was that Patrick left home to avoid an "arranged" marriage.  Seems a bit far fetched!  And brother, John, left with him.  I don't know if my grandparents knew each other before they left Ireland but they certainly both ended up in Edinburgh where they were married.  It would be too much to hope for that records exist of sea travel from Ireland to Scotland.  If I can find out exactly where Patrick was born, that might help.
Thanks again.

More than likely they were RC.

Thanks for that, aghadowey.  My family had always believed that Grandfather Patrick Connolly came from County Monaghan and it was my Grandmother, Bridget Timmin, who came from Cootehill, County Cavan.  Perhaps the family had moved from Cavan before Patrick was born.
Can you clear something else up for me?  Where would I get a copy of his birth certificate?
Thanks again.
