Family Bibles / Re: Redknap Family Bible - London - 1863

I may have a connection to your REDKNAP family that travelled far and wide!!! My 3X great grandmother was Mary Jane BREWER (nee LONGHURST). She married James BREWER 16/4/1838, tailor, at Hampton. Her father was Thomas LONGHURST Tallow merchant. According to her death cert her mother was Susannah ____(surname unknown). I have found a marriage between Thomas LONGHURST & Susannah REDKNAP at St Dunstan with St Catherine Feltham, 16/11/1794. Mary Jane was born at Twickenham and James was born at Richmond Upon Thames. There seems to be BREWER/LONGHURST/REDKNAP families at these parishes. What I have fits with these families connected by marriage etc. Mary Jane, James and their children emigrated to NSW Australia in the 1850s (uncertain at this stage as can't confirm shipping records - but between October 1851 & April 1856 as these dates are certain). I did come across somewhere a REDKNAP arriving in Aust in the 1850s so possible both events connected.

So does anyone have a link with these families?

Helen

Armed Forces / Re: Waterloo ancestors

Dear Martin,

I think I tried to post an entry before to your site but must have stuffed it up!

I'm trying to search for an ancestor who may have been at Waterloo. His details are as follows:

Surname, Forename  HOGG, Mathew
Date of enlistment     1800 10 Aug
Rank                           Corporal
Regiment                    6th Dragoons

He married May 1802 to Elizabeth PAINE/PAYNE in Dartmouth, Devon. (Regiment stationed at Exeter at the time).

He has a child born circa 1811, so he was still alive in 1810.

His wife was buried in Dartmouth, Devon 1828. There is no mention of her being buried with her husband - HOGG is an unusual name for the area.

So it may have been possible that he took part in the Battle of Waterloo. He is not listed in the Waterloo Medal Roll which I assume was only awarded to the survivors.

I would be grateful for any help you can give me about this man.

Cheers,

Helen

Dear Martin,

I have a possible Waterloo connection. My 4x great grandfather was in the 6th Inniskillings regiment in 1802 and was possibly still with them in 1810. I'm hoping he was still alive by 1815. I can't find his name on the Waterloo medal list and it's my understanding only survivors received one.

What I can definitely tell you is the following:

Marriage by licence at Dartmouth 1802 between Elizabeth PAYNE/PAIN(E) - dau of George PAYNE/PAIN(E) and Sarah DOTTIN - and Matthew HOGG of the Kingdom of Ireland 6th regiment of Dragoons.
The Regiment was stationed @ Exter at the time.

Their daugther Maria Ann(e) Dottin HOGG was born circa 1811 probably in Ireland as the regiment was in Ireland at the time - I have not been able to find her birth details so far. There is a possibility that Matthew HOGG used more than one first name.

Matthew's wife was back in Dartmouth in 1828 when she is buried - as far as I can tell - alone. HOGG is an unusual name for Dartmouth.

Maria is witness to 2 marriages in 1829. She then arrives in Australia in 1836 possibly as servant to Rev William M COWPER.

The marriage for Matthew HOGG and Maria's birth is the only concrete evidence for his existence around the time of Waterloo. As he seems to disappear, I was wondering if he was still in existence in 1815. I can't find any record of him going to US for the 1812 war - unless again he was using a different first name.

Thank you for any help/tips you can offer me,

Helen

Details re Margaret FAULKNER (yes she is Margaret DOOLAN - thanks for putting me on to her)

Died 20/11/1913 @ Macquarie St Glen Innes
Age 72
F. Patrick DOOLAN, Farmer
M. Margaret
Informant. P WHEELER, son, Glen Innes
Buried 21/11/1913 @ Roman Catholic Cemetry, Glen Innes.
Born Branxton NSW
Place of Marriage, age, and to whom
1# Maitland, 17yrs, Henry WHEELER
2# Tamworth, 38yrs, James FAULKNER

Children of marriage

1# John 64yrs
     Patrick 52
     William H 47
     Margaret 43
     Joseph 41
     Ernest A 39
     Mary L 36

2# no issue

There is at least 2yrs between the death of Henry and her remarriage. It is possible that Mary Louisa, who was 14mths when her father died, was sent to live with Bridget DOOLAN's family (aka BEAHAN and most likely corrupted to BEAN as passed down the family story line and given on John Stephen KEOGH's death cert). This might explain the half-sister story.

Thanks everyone for the help,

Helen

Dear Judith,

Thanks for the prompt reply. Yes I'm looking for both, i.e. information about John and looking to search out his descendents in Aust.

If you cross reference this page with DOOLAN and MANNIX on the rootschat site I have typed out more of his tree. Sorry to be a pain about it but I don't have the internet at home and have to make trips to our local library. Next time I'll type out more on what I have about him.

I have no idea if he is a convict or not. His death certificate says he arrived around 1836. I originally thought that he was John WHEELER aka MAHER. But MAHER was Irish and my John WHEELER was a Londoner. Both, however, seemed to be floating around AACo estates at the same time.

I have newspaper entries from the Maitland papers (on-line) and it seems he was a man with a temper, and paid the penalty with fines one of which was 30pounds which I imagine would have been crippling. Maria seems to have gained the same amount from debts owed, but whether or not she was able to collect I don't know.

I descend from John and Maria's second son Henry WHEELER who died leaving behind a young family - descend from his youngest child Mary Lousia WHEELER (my grandfather's mother).

WHEELER documentation seems to be reasonably straight forward (so far), it's when you hit the DOOLANs that I'm having problems. Part of which is that I live inter-state, but hope to go to NSW in the near future.

Unfortunately my family (i.e. aunts/cousins etc) know next to nothing about this side of their family - nothing like a good mystery!!!!! I'm at the beginning with this family and it's only through the internet that I even able to start the search. So what I have is very basic. I originally looked at doing my side of the family (have done 80% of my husband's which has nothing to do with NSW) about 15yrs ago, but gave up as too hard. So I'd be greateful for any assistance with this illusive (to me) family.

Cheers,

Helen

Australia / WHEELER decendants - hunter valley
« on: Tuesday 24 November 09 03:50 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to contact anyone out there in cyber space who descends from the 1836 marriage of John WHEELER and Maria Ann(e) Dottin HOGG who married at Carrington NSW (Australian Agricultural Co property in Hunter Valley NSW).

They had 8 children who all survived to adulthood - so there should be lots of you out there. John was born in London, Eng (according to his death certificate) and Maria was born circa 1811 in Dartmouth, Devon.

At this stage I know very little about John's origins.

However, Maria promises to be interesting as the DOTTIN connection of her name is well documented going back to the 16th/17th century. How she links in to the wider family I am not certain at this stage.

Her grandmother Sarah DOTTIN married George PAYNE @ Dartmouth in 1766.

Their daughter Elizabeth PAYNE married Matthew HOGG, from the kingdom of Ireland and a member of the 6th Regiment of DRAGOONS. Elizabeth dies in 1828. I have no idea of Matthew's fate at this stage.

Maria arrives in NSW in 1836 and marries later in the year to John. It is possible that a link exists between Maria and the Rev William M COWPER as they were at the same parish, St Petrox of Dartmouth, at the same time. COWPER performs the marriage of Maria and John and baptises their children.

Cheers,

Helen

Dear All,

None of my rels - who descend from John Stephen KEOGH have anything from his side of the family. Just curious!!!!
