Wow that was fast, thank you. There is a George Chapman registered as dying in Brentford the right quarter - I wonder if you were registered at home? I think he may have been known by his middle name. Thanks so much, hopefully someone can help further with how to get the certificate.

Channel Islands Lookup Requests / Re: Last boat from Jersey before German Occupation
« on: Wednesday 01 September 10 14:22 BST (UK)  »
I can't help with the specific enquiry but I live in Guernsey and as the 70th anniversary of the occupation has recently passed there has been a great deal in the local paper the Guernsey Press about the evacuations and the last boats. I'm sure Jersey would have had similar coverage so I suggest you contact their local newsaper which you can do through this website: http://www.thisisjersey.com/
Every account talks of the rough seas and the sickness so this seems to be common and the other common thread is that the parents had only a few hours to decide whether to evacuate their children not knowing if the occupation would last weeks or years - imagine...... of course they couldn't visit either or even receive letters so it must have been a terrible decision.

World War One / WW1 death certificate
« on: Wednesday 01 September 10 14:07 BST (UK)  »
I have just completed the forms from the MOD to apply for more information about the military service and death of my Grandfather James George Chapman in 1916. Although I have found out a lot of information about him on ancestry.co.uk I don't know how the war deaths are recorded or where to get a death certificate which I need in order to apply for the 'next of kin further information'. Is there a special registry? He died 03 Sept 1916 the field of combat is recorded as Aldershot though I was always under the impression he died in France of his wounds and I believe my Grandmother was able to visit him there, does that seem likely? He was in the Royal Fuseliers London regiment and joined at Twickenham / Hounslow which was the family home area. Several brothers also died in the same regiment. Actually he worked on the GWR so was living in Swindon and was married to a local woman and had three small boys but if the record I have found is correct  he didn't mention this - maybe he wanted to be in the same regiment as his brothers. If anyone can help me where to find the death entry I would be grateful. He was born in Q2 1890 so was 26 at the time of his death. Thanks

Scotland / Re: 1841 Census 'born in county N then I'

It certainly is and makes most sense, the Inverness idea appeals as I think some of them were born there but the mother I know for a fact was born in Guernsey so the idea that the slashes are tally marks works. Thank you all!

Scotland / 1841 Census 'born in county N then I'
« on: Friday 20 August 10 10:30 BST (UK)  »
On 'Scotland's People' I have found the census for my husband's ancestors the Macdonald family - George and his mother (Charlotte née Mayfield) and siblings - living at Back Street, Fraserburgh. They were all born 'out of county' so I understand the N means this but in the following column there is the code I or 1 - it is just a slash so could be the number or the letter. I can't find a translation does anyone know what it means? The column head says 'whether foreign born or born in England or Ireland' so I would like to know what the code means. Thanks

By the way, the transcription of the 1841 census on ancestry has James down as 'Haberdasher' is this incorrect?

I have just come across this thread as I am also researching the Ewans. My husband is a direct descendent of James Ewan through his daughter Clara Barbara who married Henry Alfred Irwin and settled in Newcastle. Are we sure James is the son of Catherine MvVity (IGI has McVity Deans) and James snr as that marriage is 1815 in IGI and James gives his date of birth as 1811 so I wondered if he could be the child of a previous marriage by either parent? He was born in Coldstream which is the area his mother hailed from and seems to have stayed there after the rest of the family settled in Dunfermline. The grandchildren who are living with James snr and Catherine and later just Catherine presumably went to live with their Grandparents after the premature death of their father and possibly their mother (does anyone know anything about her all I have is born Ireland?).

I would be glad to learn any more that anyone knows and to invite you to my tree on ancestry.com to share any information I have.

Thanks

Rosemary
