« on: Sunday 15 February 15 19:41 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks. I have most of the BMD information but would like some local information to pad this out. Don't know if they were influential in Great Oakley but do know they have quite a large grave with railings, I know they had money but wondered whether they just had ideas above there station  ;)

Essex / Lay family Great Oakley
« on: Sunday 15 February 15 17:46 GMT (UK)  »
I have been researching the Lay family and am interested to know if there are any local histories of the Great Oakley area. The Lay family were mostly blacksmiths and the particular family I am researching are Daniel and Deborah Lay who had a son Daniel, baptized !752. From their wills they seem to have owned a fair amount of property and I hoped they might have been mentioned in any local histories. Just hoping for information to add to the tree. :)

Thanks For the information. I think that could be Caroline in Eyke as that ties in with Maria who marries George Barber ,who was born in Eyke. Just for your information Maria has at least 4 children illegitimately with George before they marry in 1884 so obviously a family trait  ;)

Suffolk Lookup Requests / george Barber Eyke birth lookup
« on: Friday 25 January 13 22:23 GMT (UK)  »
I believe from information I have been given that George Barber was born 18th march 1855 in Eyke; this date is consistent with his age on all other certificates I have for his marriage and death however I cannot find his birth on free bmd. There are 2 for this area but one is 1854 and one 1856. Please could I have information from the Eyke registers to confirm the date I can then decide whether it is worth sending for one of these birth certificates.  Thanks :)

Norfolk Lookup Requests / birth lookup please Maria Sheppard Redenhall

I am looking for  the birth of a Maria Sheppard (or Shepherd). She states her birth to be in Harleston in the 1881 census which would make her birth around 1857. On her marriage certificate her father's name is left blank which would suggest she may have been illegitimate or that her father died when she was young. In 1871 she is living with her grandmother and a sister Emma. I have found an earlier census which might suggest her mother was called Caroline and was unmarried.
Any help with this would be appreciated  :)

Thank you for this information. :)
Not surprised that this has been confusing me; as George and Maria state they are married in the 1881 census! so have been looking for an earlier marrriage.
Still not sure why ernest changed his name to ernest edward on his marriage certificate.
David Barber would be the 4x great grandfather of my husband.

Many Thanks, I have been going round in circles for a long..... time
Regards Becky

Thanks for the suggestions.
Yes I can see that I have given the wrong name for the father on my original post; I have the marriage certificate for Ernest which is where I had Ernest Edward as his name. Ernest died at the beginning of the 1st world war his number suggesting he had been in the suffolk regiment and was a reserve. His army records from WW1 only call him Ernest
George Barber did indeed marry again to Mary Ann Pennell and a further time to a Betha Hayward. His mother has to be Maria as he was born sometime after the 1881 census and later census suggest a birth date between 1881 and 1882.
I guess I need to order the certificate for Ernest David  ???
