Berwickshire / Re: Origin of Jeffreys in Polwarth
« on: Wednesday 08 June 22 09:04 BST (UK)  »
CatsC is right, I have no specific knowledge of the Jaffray family, just recognised a name I had come across in my researches, and offered possible interpretations of the evidence available in the Polwarth kirk registers.
I am interested in the Jaffray/Burnet connection, as George Baillie, husband of Lady Grisell was connected to the Burnet family and Mellerstain House contains two portraits of Gilbert (Bishop) Burnet and another one of his second wife Mary Scott with her children Thomas, Mary, Elizabeth and William (eventual governor of New York).
A James Jaffray is being paid for (unspecified) work in the 1690s in Grisell, Countess of Marchmont's 'Compt Book'. Does anyone claim him?
Lady Grisell Baillie, Mistress of Mellerstain was published in 2020.

Worth noting, too, that Douglas and Young are among the most common names among the Yetholm gypsies. See

'Herd' is the usual Scottish word for shepherd. I think he lived and worked at Shotton, but as it is not much more than half a mile from the border and from the nearest farm on the Scottish side, Yetholm Mains, the church in Kirk Yetholm is by far the nearest, compared with about 7 miles to Kirknewton

Hi

In Scottish Quakers and Early America, 1650-1700 - Page 3 by David Dobson · 1998, the family are listed with birthdates and father Robert, said to be of 'Darnock', probably Darnick near Melrose.

The Kirk Session records for Roxburgh, available on SP, say that William Hog and Mary Waldie appeared before the session on 3rd June 1832, confessed to antenuptial fornication and produced a certificate of their irregular marriage which had taken place on the 26th September 1831. They were admonished. At the next meeting of the session on 11th November 1832, William Waldie and Agnes Hogg produced their certificate of irregular marriage which had taken place the previous week at Coldstream, and they were admonished.

In a list of heads of households in Roxburgh for 1831, William Hogg is listed as a hind (farm labourer) at (Roxburgh) Newtown.

I think I would plump for Alexander senior being the former tenant of Homebank.

Your William Hogg 1809 of Kelso married Mary of Roxburgh, as far as I can gather from your posts. What was Mary's surname before marriage?

Close-up of Alexander Hogg's stone- I can confirm that the dates are '1823' and '78th year of his age'.

Hi
I walked to the kirk this morning (it's 'under offer', by the way.)

Significantly, Alexander's stone is right next to the Hogg family plaque which we supposed (see earlier postings in this thread) to commemorate Rev. Robert's parents, grandparents and great-grandparents.
Rev. Robert's memorial is at the opposite end of the wall.

I would agree that there is likely an error in the Fasti. Someone who has had their 77th birthday is then in the 78th year of their age, so the dates fit perfectly for Homebank Alexander (is that the Homebank near Birgham?).
(See separate post for close-up photo of grave- too big for one post.)

Hi

I'm not sure of the whereabouts of the grave of Alexander and family, but Robert Hogg's memorial and the plaque presumed to name his parents, grandparents and great-grandparents are both on the wall of the church.
I can't comment on the accuracy of the Fasti, though other dates given for this family appear to be corroborated on the gravestones.
