Heraldry Crests and Coats of Arms / Re: counterchanged
« on: Saturday 01 July 23 19:49 BST (UK)  »
Thanks.  Clearly not the same coat.  But consistent with Papworth not mentioning a partition.

Just checked online in Burke's General Armory 1884, p811.

For NOSEWORTHY it matches Papworth.  Gu. a pile and chev. or, counterchanged of the field.

For NOSWORTHY it has Per Pale gu. and or, a chev. and a pile conjoined in point at the top of the chev. all counterchanged.

I see the House of Names offers the Nosworthy image for both names!

Thanks for responding although I disagree about countercharged.

If a blazon starts "Gu. a pile and a chev. or" I assume that the field is red and the charges gold.  If no partition is mentioned, how does one know that it is per pale, rather than per fesse for example?

Does "counterchanged of the field" imply per pale?

The Noseworthy coat of arms is shown in Papworth as
Gu. a pile and a chev. or counterchanged of the field

I would have expected
party per pale gules and or a pile and a chevron counterchanged

Does counterchanged imply parted per pale if no partition is mentioned?

Sussex Lookup Requests / Re: Edith Emma Stoner b 1889 - seeking marriage details
« on: Friday 25 September 15 22:43 BST (UK)  »
I understood from an Ancestry tree that Edith Emma Stoner (birth registered Horsham, mid-Sussex 4Q1889) married in Karachi to Alfred Harrison.  (Search on Edith Emma Stoner 1889 Horsham).

The reference given is "Holy Trinity Church. In 1914 Karachi was in India prior to the country being partitioned. Wedding source - Page 78 GRO Index Army Marriages 1881-1915 and copy of marriage certificate."

The Edith who married William George Tranter on 28/9/1913 was the daughter of Rosa Stoner (registered 1Q1888 Midhurst, West Sussex) the same district as the marriage.

I do not know which Edith M Stoner (there were many and more 'married in and became Edith M Stoner) married Frank Harrison in 1945 in Brighton RD.   A guess would be Edith M birth 2Q1920 Brighton.  There was a Brighton death of Edith Mary Harrison in Nov 2005, dofb 17/3/1920.

London and Middlesex / Re: Edith M Brown

Just been looking at some 2008 correspondence with Cindy.

I speculated that Henry Scott Stoner, brother four years older than Edith, had a son William Scott Stoner 4Q1894-3Q1947.

He may have married in 4Q1935 William S Stoner to Margery D Waller, Edmonton 3a1777
but it's not the only possibility.  If correct, and you contact me through the website I can offer contact details for a grandson.

A long time since the question was posed but I think her parents and siblings are those listed at www.stoner.org.uk/stoner2008/Fi2k.html#M173

So Edith was the youngest.  She was living in Brentford RD in 1911 and her husband's death was recorded there.

Her sister Mary Louisa may have died in 1939
Deaths Jun 1939
Bennett    Mary L    79    Brentford    3a   297

An Ancestry tree - owner interestingly in Australia - has a photo and says she died in Portsea, Hants.  Wrong age but the only one I spotted was
Deaths Jun 1953
BROWN    Edith M    79    Portsmouth    6b   435

She married in 1Q1891 and was in Portsea in the 1891 census.

Some technical observations.

As one post noted, most of the information on the SFHG site is not restricted.  Some is in a restricted directory and Windows is implemented in such a way that if you attempt to access that data the browser will prompt you for  username/password.   That is not our design, it's the way it is.

Providing a login box on the home page would mean saving the input until and in case a browser prompt needs it, intercepting the browser prompt and somehow passing the username/password to the browser at that time.  It may be technically possible but its development would need software skills that commercial companies have in their IT departments and charities run by volunteers normally do not.

I looked at this area some time ago, checking with some other societies.   One uses the Joomla! website software which can provide a login box  but even this would not allow linkage to Frontis without development work.  And Joomla! does not seem suitable for large parts of our website.

There will be differences between commercial family history sites and those run by volunteers for family history societies.

The member only data is in two places - on the SFHG site and in the Data Archive on the Frontis site.

On the website you are prompted for username and password if you try to access the data (it's a standard Windows protected directory).  On the Frontis site there are boxes on the left for username and password.

Some users are familiar with paid sites and expect to find a login box on our website.  There isn't one.   But if you go to www.sfhg.org.uk the home page has a table with topic headings.  The first one is

About LOGIN

and a little further down is

Accessing the MEMBERS ONLY pages

The text on the first of these pages is
-----------------------------------------------------
Login - using the username/password

Recently a couple of new members have been searching for somewhere to login, and have overlooked the link Accessing the Members Only pages.

In brief, there is no specific login covering all of our data. Some is on this site and if you go to one of the pages you will be prompted for the username and password. Our Data Archive is hosted at the Frontis website where you can enter the username and password in the boxes on the left.

For more about the data see Accessing the Members Only pages.
-------------------------------------------------

I'm not sure how I can make it more obvious but if you have suggestions please email the webmaster.

It's not a difficult task but more difficult to describe when not knowing how much you know.  Simplest would be to get someone to show you.
