Cornwall Completed Lookup Requests / Re: OATES/OTES, Joan/Jone - COMPLETE
« on: Tuesday 23 August 11 09:35 BST (UK)  »
No probs Wendy.

Have just approved entry into my database so hope you find it useful.

Many (most) of the OAT(E)S families from this area have their origins in another couple, John and Mary COCK. Now John was born about 1600. Since records are pretty scant for this early period it is difficult to determine relationships but it is believed that Thomas and John are siblings and their father was one John born around 1580.

There is also some conjecture that this family is part of the GRENFELL dynasty and that John had married a GRENFELL and changed his identity around 1608 and took the name GRENFELL and in fact is the origin of many of the GRENFELL clan from this area.

The correct info is that she was the daughter of Thomas OATES and Alls COCK bpt 14 April 1672 Baptism record documents that her father, Thomas, as being Thomas jnr. This identifies Thomas as son of Thomas born circa 1599. She is recorded as Jone OTES in the baptism record.

Her marriage record shows a marriage to Pascow JENKIN (likely this is a transcription error for TONKIN)  19 Aug 1699.

Martin was Jone's uncle, brother of Thomas, but didn't have any daughters. He died 1678 and refers to his sons John and Martin and an unborn child in his Will. The child was another son, William.

This research material originates from the late Geoff McKee who headed up the St Just Research Group of the CFHS and had access to most of the original material and was related to this line himself.

Hope this clears this up for you.

Technical Help / Re: Economic printer with Puppy Linux
« on: Tuesday 27 October 09 17:26 GMT (UK)  »
Hello
I am using puppy linux 4.2 and i am searching for a compatible printer at a reasonable price e.g. below 90AUD
In the hope that a rootschatter may be using such a printer I would appreciate some guidance
I have a HP Deskjet F2235 but seem unable to discover a suitable Driver for same, so I now am going to purchase another printer but need to know if it is compatible
Regards Alf

There is a universal printer software for Linux known as CUPS. It is well supported and contains the necessary drivers for most common printers.

A google reveals that HP themselves have a Linux driver;

The Lighter Side / Re: Shropshire chatters

Thanks Jill,

Judging by the small number of records for this family in the area, there is a very good chance we are related.

There is an interesting link is names; Thomas and Sarah named a child Eleanor. The mother of the John I am looking at, born 1743, was Ellinor. His parents are recorded as John and Ellin and other records Ellinor.

1850 is too young. On the law of averages the male spouse tends to be around 25 when getting married, in my experience. The marriage of John and Sarah READ is recorded for 1761 although the first recorded baptism is Apr 1764. Unless Sarah had a number of miscarriages or stilborns the marriage date may be suspect. If John was the one born 1743 he would have been 18 when he married.

Are there any resource materials or a Parish Clerk that could look up burial records? John would probably have died in the early 1800's on the law of averages and burial record or even better a Will would provide some insight.

Regards, Rob

Does anyone have any Shropshire Stubbs, Simon, Ikin or Llewellin?

Hi Jill, I have been working through my Cornish ancestors and have discovered a link with Llewellin, Shropshire. Are you still researching this family and had any leads?

My Gr-gr-grandmother was Charlotte Llewellin born 1817 in Falmouth, Cornwall. Her father, George, is recorded in the 1841 Census in St Buryan, Cornwall as being from "foreign parts" i.e. not Cornish. He died 1845 aged 70 which indicates he was born 1775. In the 1851 Census his widow is recorded as a "seaman's widow".

The IGI indicates that there is only one person matching this, born in the UK. The record indicates him born 1775 in Whitchurch of John and Sarah READ. They married 1761 in Whitchurch. A list of George's siblings also shows a sister Charlotte. The name George also pops up quite a lot in the records in Whitchurch. The only John that could match his father was born 1743 but seems a bit young. There may also be an error because according to records this couple's first child was only baptised 1764.
