The Stay Safe Board / Re: Diary summary week ending 8th February 2026

I've been very quiet, had a hell of a week, sitting room had water pouring through the ceiling on Sunday, plumbers fixing the leak Monday, me clearing up in bathroom above on Tuesday, re-fixing my pacemaker check appointment most of week, having trouble getting into my M & S account later, shopping at supermarket through biblical downpour, dodging half a flock of sheep who had all come down from the hills 'cos of the weather, ruined a pair of OH's trousers ironing, spent morning trying to buy another replacement pair..... can't get into Rootsquiz, really fed up. All I need to make the week perfect is cats to be sick all over me.....
Next week must be better..... won't it be?

The Common Room / Re: Ancestry family trees full of lazy errors

! Incredible! But we all read it all the time.
Sometimes people simply see, or read - what they want to encounter. No matter how much evidence was presented to the contrary, a relative of mine simply would not accept her Irish ancestry - right up to her death, insisted she was Scottish ( and descended from Robert the Bruce, no less!) despite reams of evidence from myself and others, diligently researched, that prior to the 1870s both parents on one side had been firmly Irish.
Had she done an online tree, she would firmly have accepted and incorporated anything Scottish, and "lost" anything Irish. A really good job she'd no I.T. skills, or all the people who simply copy from other trees would all have got her - and us, I suppose - as relatives and descendants.

I've researched and done some trees from linked people to our lines - not direct ancestors, but people with whom we share a common ancestor.
Oddly enough I seem to have found that some characteristic skills and abilities - several art and print related people, and gardeners, pop up quite a lot on the common lines.
Proud of one or two that link to reputable / interesting /even well-known people, and so sad at the lives of some less fortunate lines with which we share common ancestry.

Fascinating how several sources and threads have knitted this query into a really interesting wide-reaching search. Thanks for letting us eavesdrop.
How much more interesting and satisfying to have an unusual surname to trace. Most of my ancestry is .... so boring. (Sighs)

Have you sought help / information from local newspaper archives? Or any Chertsey area Historical Society or group? Worth a try.

All my same generation nearly seem to have died, and no real discoveries for years - boring families, no scandal or excitements on any branch of my own family tree.

Disposed of last  elements of Christmas dinner etc - I'm a lousy cook, but having to tackle it for the first time fully this year. Last year OH was able to help/supervise me, but he can't seem to manage it this year! Cats enjoyed their prawn breakfast yesterday, a ritual all our cats have had; first time for this pair, been with us almost a year now. (Wonder whatever happened to the "Cats Thread"? Seemed to fade away.... otherwise they'd have been on there, boasting about prawn breakfast, and finely chopped up venison.....
All washing up and tidying up done, need to tackle a boring supermarket shop next. Sic transit gloria Christmas day!
