Dear Jan,I can't thank you enough for this information!. I do believe there is a connection here with Oziel Ashford, as Henry had a grandson named Ozal.Here in America that is not a common name, we all wondered where it came from, now I think we have the answer!

   I have not been able to find out if Henry & Emma are listed in the 1841 Somerset Census.
  I live in the U.S. so I don't have acsess to any of the U.K records.
  I would be so grateful if someone in the group would be able to tell me if Henry & Emma are listed in the census.

Hello, I had been told by family memebrs that my great grandparents Henry Ashford & Emma Whaler were born in Lancashire County, I had been searching for records on them for quite a long time with no results. Then just recently I had posted a message on the Welsh board regarding my grandfather Alfred Ashford, (Henry & Emma's son) A rootschat member found the family living in Breconshire Wales in 1851. Henry & Emma both listed their place of birth as Mason, Somerset, the memebr who found the census record pointed out he is not sure if Mason is a town in Somerset or it could be a mispelling of a town name.If anyone would have any information regarding Mason Somerset, or if anyone would have any information regarding Henry Ashford born Oct. 1817 or his wife Emma Whaler born 1815. I would be so happy to hear from you.

I do thank you all so much for your  help with my search. But unfortunatly this Alfred is not my grandfather.
  My grandfather came to America in 1850 at the age of 9 with his parents Henry and Emma, and sisters Sarah and Mary Ann.
  I did find a few entires for Alfred Ashford on the FREE BMD site, and  a friend of mine who is of Welsh descent told me only two entries on the BMD were registered in Wales, those entries were in Narborth, and Crickhowell.My friend suggested I see if there are any census records from the 1840's or 1850 that might list Henry & Emma, that way I would be able to narrow down the location were my grandfather was born
  Census records here in the U.S. date back to the 1700's I'm not sure how far census records go back for Wales.

I do thank you for your reply. I have tried the FREE BMD, but I'm not sure how to use it. I came up with several listings on all three names, and all were in different locations in Wales.
  I do have the immigration for the Ashford family, they left Liverpool in the fall of 1854 aboard the ship Universe, headed for New York City. I also have the naturalization document showing they became American Citizens Oct 8 1868.
If you would be so kind as to tell me how to use the Free BMD, I would be very grateful. I do know my grandfather Alfred was born July,1846 or 47 and his parents names were Henry Ashford and mothers maiden name was Emma Whaler.Any information you can give would be greatly appreciated.
