Hello Starrymum,
No, I haven't progressed on this topic but mainly because I have not been doing much family research over the last year or so. I've recently resumed so no doubt will return to this subject later on. Rgds,

Re Finlay MacCorquodale & Catherine Matheson, their dau. Christian ( b. 1831) married Hector MacLellan at Kilphedir NU in 1855, his 1st wife Ann MacAulay died 1855 at Old Split Croft 5 Balemore leaving a son John and dau. Margaret. Hector & Christian emigrated 1857 to Ailsa Craig, Ontario and had 9 children there, hence many descendants. Hector was my gg grandfather's ( Ewen) brother. Their sister Christian married John MacDonald of Houghary, and sister Catherine married Archy MacDonald, a shepherd on Vallay originally frm Skye. Their eldest brother married Janet MacRury (from Scolpaig?), lived at Tighary. I have a lot of info on our MacLellan connections in Canada, and happy to share if of interest. Rgds, Sandy M.

I just noticed this Thread so perhaps a bit late to add my tuppence worth to the topic. I believe I have a rather distant connection to the MacDonald family. If I have the right families re Malcolm MacDonald b.1836, parents: Archibald MacDonald, Catherine MacLellan. Catherine was a sister of Ewen MacLellan (my gg.grandfather), also John, Hector, and Christina. Their parents were: Donald MacLellan & Margaret Ferguson. The 1841 Census for North Uist records Donald McLellan (80) living with his daughters Christina, Catherine, son in law Archie MacDonald etc. I have a sizeable family tree and happy to share info. Archie MacDonald was born in Skye.

Hello Jane,  no, I cannot say for certain that I picked up the right Simon Fraser and Margaret MacIntosh. So I need to do some further checking on the subject. Forget about the Rev. part of John Fraser it probably wasn't on the MI. I did take a photo of the gravestone but it is illegible because of the fact that it is a flat 'stone, a bit weathered,  and not enough contrast in the inscription. However, I will get someone to revisit the 'stone and give me a full copy of the MI (it is a fairly long screed singing the praises of the wonderful work that John did in the Lord's name during his lifetime! Strangely, I fully intended to get in touch with you as I have recently corresponded with Colin, Canberra and he is waiting for me to get back to him. I was away from home for 4 weeks over the Christmas and New Year period so I am well behind on my admin work. If you are in touch with Colin, tell him to give you my email address so that we can continue our contact.  Kindest regards, AMM.

Inverness / Re: Barra MacLeans & Camerons
« on: Wednesday 16 January 13 01:28 GMT (UK)  »
Hello Anne Marie, Many thanks for your efforts on my behalf. I'm a little rusty on this topic and need to do a quick swot and get back to you. I intentionally left the topic in an 'Open' status hoping that somebody might come up with a clue. You mentioned 'Ann' but this should be 'Jane'. A simple typo methinks! I'm happy to think about any possibilities. I do not know if Jane had any siblings. The parents details were taken from Jane's death cert. d.11Nov1887 North Uist. The 1881 Census has a Jane Cameron(56), a widow, born Barra & dau. Mary Cameron(26) born Kilmonivaig, living at Unachan (Spean Bridge). This just might be the link to Marion Cameron's CAMERON family. I can't find the details at the moment, but in the Barra OPRs there is a Christian Cameron, born Lochaber who married a MacDonald in Barra. I traced this family thru to about 1901 in Barra but went no further with this line of research. I think Calum MacNeil confirmed that there were MacLeans, tailors who lived in the Allasdale area of Barra and it's interesting that the 1841 Census records a Niel MacLean (40), tailor, with family, living there. Could Niel be a brother of Jane? Again, I did a lot of checking but to no avail.   I will get back to you again once I refresh my memory on the various aspects of this research. Thanks again, Sandy MacL.

Istrice, many thanks for your speedy reply. You link was very helpful. I had been somewhat misled by John Fraser's MI which stated he come from Dunean whereas he was born at Tomvoid which is not quite in the Dunean (or Dunain) area. Unless I have picked up the wrong family which is always a possibility.  Rgds AMM

Inverness / Frasers of Boleskine
« on: Sunday 30 December 12 00:49 GMT (UK)  »
Need help. Rev John Fraser d.23Sep1866 Isle of Boreray, North Uist. His MI (Clachan Sands Old cem. Nth Uist) states "came from Dunean near Inverness". I traced births of John and siblings Margaret, Isabel, Mary, & Thomas in OPRs. All born at 'Tomvoit or Tomvoid or Tomvoad in the Parish of Boleskine. Father: Simon Fraser (described as 'Tenant').  Mother : Margaret MacIntosh married 21 Jun 1791. Does anybody know the location / history of this croft and/or any info on Simon & Margaret pedigrees? Many thanks, AMM

Inverness / Re: Hebrides People Web Site

I had a similar experience to RedMystic. It was my first access to this new site and I tested the quantity & quality of the information made available for £1 a throw! I rapidly got through the best part of £50 but was disappointed with the results which contained incorrect information i.e. information previously recorded accurately in the Croft Histories etc. produced by Bill Lawson. So, at this point in time it would appear that the HP information is not cross-checked with previous publications; rather strange given that it emanates from more or less the same source. Hopefully the HP site will improve over time but I am unlikely to use it unless I think it just might contain that all-important clue to a frustrating mystery.
