I thought that I had previoulsy become involved in this thread but having checked it appears not.

My Beard ancestors moved to Lydney as tinworkers in the 1830s having previously been agricultural workers in Framilode. My Beards remained in Lydney until the 1940s. The younger ancestors moved to Wales in the 1920s and Cheltenham in the 1900s, one the Wales Beards emigrated to Canada after the 2nd world war. I am not aware of any living Beards within my tree, the male line having ceased.

I think I have everything wrapped up in terms of names but would be delighted to be suprised by any additions. Having found the names, I am now trying to delve into people's lives although inevitably this is proving not that easy but nil deperandum.

Alf, please fee free to PM me to share information.

Thanks Morgan. That is the same person (Daniel \ David) - do you have anything else about the marriage, witnesses etc. I had picked up the basic information through some other research but anything else would be really great. I've been stuck behind the brick wall since I posted this!!

Hi,

I've received my CLHS journals and they've given me a great deal of information about my great uncle. The 1923 period is recorded in Journal 23, 2007 and I'd recommend a copy to anyone interested in the wider hsitory.

Anyway, the programme for 1923 included:
    Dick Whittington Pantomime which opened on New Year's Day for one week;
    Randolph Sutton Theatre Company in March;
    The Gay Beggars, a costume concert party in July;
    The Beggar's Opera (English Opera Company) September;
    Datas, The memory man October;
    2 Pantomimes, The House that Jack Built and Dick Whitington and his cat.

    Not sure if this hels anyone, but one of thses may the troupe in the photo.

    The owner proprotor was H G Bear, Manager H Greenland.

    Here's a picture I've found but unfortunately it dates to 1913 when it was called the hippodrome. However, it looks identical to the Coliseum photo on p3 here so confirms the location. The building has been empty for some time and proposal made more than once for demolition and redevelopment. Sad, but a sign of the times. At least there are images saved showing better times.

    I can add a bit to this. I'm reseaching my Family History and my Great uncle was Henry George Beard who was the Owner of the Coliseum from 1919 to the 1940s. Perhaps the poster says H G Beard? This is a great find for me and I'll add it to my files! :D

    The local history society published some articles in its journals a few years ago. I've oredered copies of these and if anything relevant to the thread crops up I'll post it.

    My gg Grandfather was Daniel Coslett, according to later census records, b1817 in Llangyfelach. However, he doesn't appear on a census until 1871. His first wife and children appear on the 1841 census for Clydach village, one the children, Margaret coslett being just 1 month old. He married his first wife Mary Tamplin in Llangyfelach in January 1836. Mary died in 1846. From the certificate I have of his second marriage in 1864, I've gleaned that his father was William Coslett who by that time had passed away. I've gone around in a number of large circles trying to find the missing years including many mad searches though FindMyPast and Ancestry but have drawn a blank. I'd be really grateful for any information, perhaps something from the records of his first marriage in 1836. Many thanks.

    Hi,

    This is message for GWRL who sent me a personal message. Being new to Roots chat and not knowing my way around I'm not sure how to send a message back as it says I'm either not allowed to do so or my profile is full when I click on the item in my inbox.

    In short, I do have some John Lloyds in my family tree but none for the dates you quoted I'm afraid. By coincidence though, part of my Beard line ran out married Chrums in Canada.

    Hi,

    I've been researching my family including the Beards for about 4 months. With the help of FOD.net, Alf's transcriptions of Lydney Church and Willow4873, I've managed to trace back to my gggggGrandparents Samuel and Ann. A lot really helpful and very nice people out there.

    My line follows down through Charles Edward (1867 - 1942) and Hannah Jane (1865 -1930). Hannah Jane Coslett has proved an enigma; she appears on just one census with that name, 1881 and then appears as a Beard in 1901.

    I'd be particularly interested if anyone has any information on Charles' brother, Henry George Beard (1876 - ????). He moved to Cheltenham and became the owner of the Collesium cinema as it was for a number of years. He was married to May Clift and they had 3 daughters none of whom I believe married. He was a tobacconists assistant in 1901 and there's no indication how he made the transition.
