Stirlingshire / Re: Ordnance Store - Stirling

My grandfather was an ordnance store clerk in 1929 when he was living in Bannockburn, so there must be a good chance he was based at one of these depots. Does anyone know if staff lists are available?

Hi Canadagal

Last time I was at the Records Office in Edinburgh I did some research on Alexander Gibson of Glencrosh, the tenant of Gilchristland farm, wondering if he might tie in to my family - no links so far though!

He died on 15 December 1851 and in his will left bequests to the surviving children of his deceased siblings Robert, Ann, Margaret, Sarah and Elizabeth. Robert's daughter was Mary Gibson McTurk. Wonder if any of these names coincide with children of the Alexander Gibson you are looking for?

Incidentally, I was looking for my 3x gt grandfather Alexander Gibson who was a farmer, married in Closeburn in 1793 to Ann Brown. Still haven't tracked him down!

The Lighter Side / Re: BBC TV "WDYTYA?" Series 9 Episode #4: LARRY LAMB (Actor)

A thoroughly entertaining programme and definitely one of the best ever WDYTYAs. You couldn't help but warm to Larry Lamb as he made all these amazing discoveries.

On the side issue of Wallace the Man Eating Lion, he is preserved (stuffed!) in Sunderland Museum. When I lived in Sunderland as a lad I used to love to pop in and look at him. I seem to remember that he is also mentioned in "Sons and Lovers" by DH Lawrence. Quite a celebrity!

Durham Lookup Requests / Re: 1841 census West Boldon

A bit more information has come to light.

I believe John Seymour's mother was named Ann, born in Lanchester, Co Durham around 1811. She was living with John in Hartlepool in 1851 but I still can't find them in 1841.

Yorkshire (North Riding) Lookup Requests / Re: 1841 & 1851 census Seymour

I think I may have found him in 1851, living in Hartlepool, Co Durham with his mother Ann and stepfather John Bellwood. That would tend to suggest that his early years were spent in Durham after all.

He is certainly elusive as regards censuses, not turning up again until 1881, back in Hartlepool. No sign of him in 1861 and in 1871 his wife and child are listed in Thirsk, but not him.

Anyway, it would seem that this particular request could come off the North Yorkshire board.

Thanks for your help.

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Re: 1861 & 71 Census - Durham family
« on: Tuesday 29 November 05 00:26 GMT (UK)  »
Good to see a bit of activity on this request after all this time, especially as I still haven't tracked down the two William Durhams. It's amazing how common the name is! ???

Thanks for your assistance Bob. I have now found the family who were at Clarendon Square in 1861 and Eversholt St in 1871 living at 28 Carlton Street, St Pancras in 1881. Mary Ann Durham is the head and Edgar, John and Laura are living with her. I know Wm Durham junior was living in Hartlepool in 1881 so this could still be the family but I can't make the link. The younger Wm Durham's age varies considerably in later censuses and at his death in 1937 and I haven't managed to find his birth.

Good point about Harcourt St. I had spotted that myself and oddly enough Wm Durham's wife's birthplace is given in 1881 as "Brown, Marlebone", Brown St being right next to Shouldham St. It would be interesting to know which parish covers the area, as presumably that is the meaning of St Andrew, St James etc in the 1861 census.

Regards

Geoff

Never mind, thanks for looking.

I didn't think of this when I posted the request but if you get the chance could you look for Ann McQueen, who was his godmother. If not in West Boldon I think there were McQueens in Whitburn near Sunderland.

Thanks again for your help.

Yorkshire (North Riding) Lookup Requests / 1841 & 1851 census Seymour
« on: Monday 27 June 05 11:58 BST (UK)  »
I've been trying to find John Seymour (aka Seymours), b West Boldon, Co Durham around January 1834 but to no avail.

As I know he ended up in North Yorks, I wonder if his family may have moved there when he was a child. He turns up later in the Easingwold area but for his early years I have no other family details or addresses to go on.

Any help gratefully received.
