Hi Paul.g ,
I saw that on Bristol KYP a few weeks back and managed to get a decent pic of it although lost some colour . Just showed my dad about a week ago after coming to Bristol . He remembers St . Philips and The Dings from many years ago and the many family stories of my family who had various pubs in the area ( through marriages ) . I do have a modern day picture of the waste ground beside the bridge and have pieced together odd pieces of info . found in that area . Sorry to say , I have only concentrated on the Victoria Public House side of the road but will certainly pass anything I find on to you regarding your pub..The Royal Oak .
Thanks to Hanes Teula also who has helped on various topics of mine through the years .

I have directed you to a possible baptism for "your" Jane.

Re the marriage you have 2 interesting witness names. Unfortunately, I only have access to the transcript - hence Barnett Hichason surname remains a puzzle.
Thankyou again..I did wonder if it should have been Richardson or a similar name..time will tell

Also I have no 1861 census record of the family and believe as they were at 42 Hotwells Rd ( Tiger Tavern ) in 1841 , 1851 and known there ( Jane ) in 1871 , that they were at this address .

Jane and son Thomas are on Hotwell Rd in 1861. She is written as "James", though it says "wife".
Thankyou maddys52..even playing around with name on Familysearch never revealed this .

James [sic]  BARNETT  67  Swansea  (beer house keeper)
Thomas                         31  Bristol  (engineer)
Amelia HAYNES            28  Haverfordwest  (lodger)
RG9/1727/17 pg 27

Transcribed as Sarah BARNETT on familysearch - and they have included  the households above on the actual census sheet.

Of possible interest:

In hearings for applications for new licenses -
"Mrs Barnett, 42, Hotwell Road. In this case the posting of the notices was not proved, and the application was not entertained."

 Monday,  Sept. 10, 1866
Publication: Western Daily Press
maddys52 , thankyou for your help with the info . you posted certainly a big help in building up my research on this new surname in my family .

The son is named Thomas Rees Barnett bap 7 March 1830 at St James Bristol.

Could Rees be an indication of his mother's maiden name?
It does seem a strange additional to the name and one I will be aware of going forward..thankyou
