Thank you for your helpful information and insights.  I've not been in a position to move my research forward since 2005 - hopefully back on it soon.  I did visit Hull for the first time last year and stood where the chapel would have been on Great Thornton Street - all modern housing now.

Hello,

Thank you for the helpful information and enabling me to piece together what happened with these ancestors.  I've not been focused on research since the original post in 2005 so this update is invaluable.

Hello all,

Thank you for the helpful information and suggestions on possible origins, particularly on potential place names in Germany.  Unfortunately I've not been in a position to move things on and discover any more about A C Kadansky since the original post in 2005.  I plan to get back into research mode soon - after 18yrs, i'm hoping there is a lot more online (fingers crossed esp in Europe) than when I first started looking into this.

Completed Census Requests / Whats happened to my ancestors???
« on: Sunday 27 November 05 22:17 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there,

We're currently researching the Kadansky family who lived in Hull from 1870s onwards.

So far we've been pretty successful in tracing people (luck of having an unusual surname probably) however two ancestors seemingly disappeared in the early 1900s and we cannot trace what they got up to later in life or their deaths.

Louis Oscar Kadansky b 1879, last recorded in 1901 census in Sculcoates, Hull.

Rudolph Broderick Kadansky b 1883, last recorded as witness at wedding in Hull in 1909.

Obviously the 1911 census might be able to help us out when it is revealed (bit of a long wait) but has anyone else got any ideas about what could have happened to these two?  How likely is it that death certificates would go astray?  We've looked at records of British deaths abroad at PRO and this has not been fruitful.

Help!!

Northumberland / Trying to trace a murder....
« on: Wednesday 12 January 05 22:55 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

We are tracking down our family with the surname of Kadansky.

Through a recent search on the National Archives we spotted that closed records are held relating to a murder case involving an Albert C Kadansky.  The date of the file is 1970 with an access date of 2042.  We know that A C Kadansky was a relative of ours and are keen to trace further information.

Obviously we are intrigued about the details of this case but more importantly as we are endeavouring to find living relatives, we do not want to cause upset by careless remarks if we decide to try to contact A C Kadansky's children/grandchildren.

Albert Kadansky and his wife, Margaret (nee Richardson) lived in Northumberland and had 6 children.  We are not sure where exactly they lived but the registration district for family B/M/Ds was Northumberland Central.  Margaret died in 1970 and we wondered whether it was purely coincidental that the murder case file date was 1970.  We have not sent for a death certificate yet.

We were wondering if anyone knew of any online databases of Northumberland newspaper stories/obituaries in 1970s that we could search or any other sources of information that could help us build a better picture of this situation.

Thanks,

Binky & Chewy

Yorkshire (North Riding) Lookup Requests / 1851 Census - Eston, Yorkshire
« on: Wednesday 12 January 05 22:33 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

Had previously put this on the East Riding board but think more appropriate on here - North Riding.

If anyone has a spare moment, could they please see if they can find spot the following people on the 1851 census:

Eston, Yorkshire
Thomas Allison (about 33yrs old) and wife, Mary Ann (about 39yrs old).  Children - Thomas ( about 2)

In the 1871 and 1861 census, they ran the Ship Inn, High Street Eston.

Thanks for your help!

Thanks so much for that information - you're a star!

Anyone got access to the 1851 census?  I'm pretty sure the Allisons were in Eston then as well.

Thanks

Europe / Looking for information on Kadansky
« on: Monday 10 January 05 02:02 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

We're trying to trace part of our family - surname of Kadansky.  Earliest record we have of a Kadansky in the UK is Albert Charles Kadansky in the 1871 census.  His origins are uncertain - in the 1871 census he is listed as from LeBoeuf, Germany.  In 1881, Copenhagen Denmark and in 1901, a polish subject so who knows where he is from!

He was a painter and paper hanger living in Hull till he died in 1918.  Also listed in numerous directories as the caretaker and assistant missionary of the Hebrew (or Foreign) Mission Room, 45 Great Thornton Street, Hull.  He married three times - 1st wife we cannot find a death certificate for.

Our great grandfather was his son and for some reason, (unknown to living family), became estranged from his father and the rest of the Kadanskys.  The mystery of this family breakup and who the Kadanskys were has spurred us on in our research.

It is both a blessing and curse that we are researching an uncommon name like Kadansky - easy to pick out our relatives on records but little to go on.

So...

* has anyone come across the surname Kadansky in their research?
* anyone got any tips on tracing AC Kadansky back to his homeland (i'm not sure Leboeuf as a place exists)?
* anyone know anything about Hebrew Mission Rooms (we think this is linked to the London Jewish Society and was an organisation to convert jews to christianity)?
* what possible answers could there be for no death certificate for his first wife - we've searched under her maiden name and as he did not move house/areas, is he really likely to have been a bigamist?

Any comments/thoughts to help us on our trail would be much appreciated.

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / Re: Anyone with knowledge of Hull churches/chapels?
« on: Sunday 09 January 05 19:06 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks for the prompt replies!  Much appreciated.

We too had thought that maybe this was a Jewish institution however understand that it is unlikely to be Jewish for Jews but rather Christian mission to convert the influx of immigrant Jews.  Apparently the word 'mission' is key as Jewish institutions would not be called this.

The Kelly's directory of Hull for 1899 lists the Hebrew Missions Room as being in conjunction with the LJS (not completely sure what this stands for - maybe London Jewish Society) and states the Revd Krunig as visiting cleric.  Again this does indicate that maybe this is not a Jewish organisation......unless someone knows otherwise!

Sorry not to put this information in the original post.
