Northumberland Lookup Requests / Re: St Michael's Church, Elswick
« on: Wednesday 14 January 15 22:00 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Sabaru
St Michael's R.C. Parish Church Elswick, their Parish Records are in Tyne and Wear Archives as St Michael's was my mothers families parish. I went to St Michael's about eight years ago now to view the parish registers. Fr. Bellamy is an old man who has been a priest here since about 1965. I too phoned several times & eventually I made arrangements with him to visit. When I got there he had brought all the registers into the dinning room & had placed them on the table for me. If I remember rightly there was only two marriage registers, one full and the other still in use. The Bishop very much wanted them to go into T&W Archives & eventually the full registers were handed in. I have viewed the registers in T & W Archives on microfilm. I didn't realise that Fr. Bellamy was still at St Michael's. If I can be of any help as I'm due another visit to T & W Archives please let me know.

Hi Tracey,
You mention Catholic children's homes, if the family were Catholic the Parish Church for the area including Hawes Street, Elswick is St Mary and the Parish Registers are still in the church. Newcastle Central Library has a good local studies section including old newspapers. I'm not too sure about on-line arrangements but you could always try and get in touch with someone from there who might be able to help you. If I get the chance to go myself I'll ask about any reports of any accidents on Scotswood rd. I've been trying to get back to the church to review the registers but something always comes up so If I can I'll check for anything there for you but I can't promise, but if I can I will. Good luck

Durham / Re: Awde/ Aude/ Ord surnames

Researching my husband's family history I have found the Awde/Aude/Aud name. I'm back to about 1600 when I have them in Cockfield, Co Durham, I've also found the family in various locations through the centuries including Staindrop, Co Durham, Startforth  in North Riding of Yorkshire, Dufton, in Westmorland, areas of Cumberland and Tanfield area of Co Durham. As for spelling I have found all variations of the name written in parish registers for siblings in one family especially in early parish records.  Good luck with your research.:)
