Hi, we are still trying to find anything at all about my husband's grandfather - we know that he was german and was interned in Knockaloe.  I have heard back from the Swiss Red Cross and in spite of giving a camp personal ID number they say that they have no information about him. His surname was either Herold or he sometimes used Rolf-Herold. Does anybody have any ideas at all? - He never came back to Manchester to be with grandma - we are not sure where he could have gone to from the camp - was he put onto a ship to go somewhere?. There is no information at the cemetery at Cannock about a burial - and we think that he may have been Jewish.
This was during WW1.
Anything at all would be most gratefully received. Thanks

P.S. Grandfather came from Germany - we understand Dresden - originally although he was living in Manchester when he was interned. Thanks

Hi, this is where we have a bit of a tricky problem - we think that grandfather was Jewish and he changed his name around a bit.  What we do have are the names John Arthur Herold (or could be Rolf-Herold as a surname). He also called himself William on one document. My husband's surname is Herold but on one of the birth certificates of grandfather's children the surname os given as 'Rolf-Herold' - thanks for any help you can give at all.  We ahve no idea at all what became of him.

Thank you so much for your emails.  I would appreciate it if you could look in the book to see if there are any photos of Camp 3, Compound2, hut 1b.
Many thanks, we are waiting to hear from the International Red Cross to see if they have any record of what happened to Grandfather - he never returned home to England. Regards.

Would you be able to help me find anything out at all? he originally was from Germany - were some of the German internees sent back to germany after the 1st World War?
Any help at all much appreciated, thanks.

Europe / Dresden - Herold or Rolf-Herold
« on: Saturday 24 October 09 12:26 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I am trying to help my husband find his roots which we know started in Dresden.  His grandfather was (as we know) John Arthur conrad Rolf Herold and was born in 1861.  We know that he was in England in about 1896 and could have been earlier. I just have this feeling that he could have been part of the exodus by some Jewish people who lived there and it was around 1881. I could be completely off the wall here - we can find his children detailed on the census for 1901. The trail has gone completely cold - we were told that he was interned in the Isle of Man but in spite of having his number etc his death has not been recorded anywhere. Is there anywhere in Dresden that I could contact the synagogue there to see if they can help?. I say herold or Rolf-herold because the name on his first child's birth certificate is Rolf-Herold and after that the names of the other children are Herold. Any input would be much appreciated so bye for now.
