Australia / Looking for passenger lists - the ship Devon
« on: Friday 30 October 09 00:27 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I'm trying to find any info about my gg-grandfather who arrived into Port Adelaide on the ship Devon, on the 2nd or 4th March, 1880.  His name was Norman MacKinnon, and it looks like he arrived with his wife, Margaret MacKinnon.
I wonder if there is a scanned copy of the passenger list, so I can see what other info may have been recorded on it.
Is this the correct forum to ask about his Police record, too?  He joined the Police force somewhere later in 1880.  Not sure what I can get copies of, and what they may show.
Thanks for any help!

Kirsty,

Wow, thanks for that.  I've really got to learn how to search that newspapers site better... didn't think of looking for Devon!
And you misquoted the date slightly... it was in March.  And I'd say on the 2nd or 3rd March.  :)
I'll be in Adelaide for Xmas, so it looks like I'll have lots of documents to pick up, hopefully!

And yes, I'll try posting a question to the Australia forum, see if anyone there can tell me more about the Devon.

Thanks for all yours and everyones help too, by the way.

I don't see a passenger list anywhere obvious either, however I have found newspaper entries on it's arrival. The Devon arrived on the 3rd April 1880 from London. It would appear there was a measles epidemic onboard.

The State Library and State Records look to be full of goodies for family history research, unfortunately you really need to be there in person to sift through it all by the looks of things.

edit: For details on things like the police records it might be worth posting a query on the Australia Board, you'll find quite a few folk there with a lot more knowledge about such matters than I have.  ;)

Kirsty,

I found some good info on those S.A. sites.  Including a date they arrived in Adelaide!
They came over on the ship Devon (I don't now where it departed from) arriving in Port Adelaide on the 4th March 1880.  I also then found a record of him starting work with the Police on the 5th November 1880.  He was married then, and was married prior to departure (as his wife's name was also on the list I found).  This is where I found the info re the ship (GRG35/48 Records relating to official assisted immigration - Crown Lands and Immigration Office)

I haven't been able to find a passenger list for that ship however, and I don't know where it departed from, and who got on where.

I assume for any more info re: the police record, I probably have to visit the State Library?
Thanks for all the help, by the way.

Kirsty,

That's definitely him, in the death notices.  Its amazing what people find!  How did you get onto that site?  Do I have to pay to do that search?
So now I've confirmed his date of death, what next?
Will a death certificate (if and where I can get one of them) contain info about his exact date of birth?
What about finding out when he came to Australia?  His wife was born in India I believe, and I've heard he may have visited there.  Perhaps he went there from Scotland, met her, and moved here?

And thanks iolair, I had found that record, the only problem I have is that I believe this Norman was born 9th Sept 1856.  Could the dates just be wrong?  And I only mentioned his father as being Hector as I had found this record.  :)

Have you seen this article from the Argus Friday 1 October 1875? I don't know if it's the same man, but he was also from Invernessshire...

may be different man after all...

Ignore the links above.

Found him.

He did indeed die in 1906. Adelaide Advertiser has his funeral notice.

He is buried in West Terrace Cemetery Adelaide.

Hi all,
I'm looking for my great-grandfather, Norman MacKinnon (or McKinnon), apparently born in Inverness, Scotland (all I know!) in approx. 1856, and died in Adelaide, South Australia, Australia in approx. 1906.  I'm not sure when he emigrated to Australia, and the only other info I have is that he married (again, don't know when) a Margaret Nelson and had a son b. 1890 called Norman MacKinnon.
I hope someone can help!

Wow, thanks for all these replies!  Its really interesting reading, and certainly helps clear up the confusion for me.  And I guess I should remember that not long ago, not everyone could read and write, so I can understand how spelling differences etc could arise!  :)

Hi Monica.  Actually, my name is Neil.  My gg-grandfather's name is Hector McKinnon.
Thanks for clearing that up.  So can I assume (considering I'm a MacKinnon) that those families that now have a surname of McKinnon have basically adopted an incorrect spelling made centuries ago?  :)

Scotland / MacKinnon vs. McKinnon?

Hi, I'm pretty much a beginner to this whole family tree thing (only been ernestly researching for a few weeks but been 'getting around to it' for a few years :) ).
I'm a MacKinnon.  I'm wondering what the difference is between MacKinnon's and McKinnons?
I've found a great-grandfather who's name on his birth certificate is Norman MacKinnon, however on the same certificate, his father is listed as Hector McKinnon.
