Warwickshire / Re: Warriner & Mason

Hello,

Over forty years ago I worked in the insurance industry and the name Warriner & Mason rang some distant bells. If my memory is correct the company may have been in Bearwood Road, Smethwick in the 1960s. I also remember a story regarding one of its' last directors (not in anyway derogatory by the way) and will try and remember his name these sometimes come back to me.
I don't know whether this titbit is of any use to you.

Hello Linda,

It's a long time ago but was just looking at Family Tree again as I quite often do to tie up loose ends and came across the following on the web.

Regarding the Stevensons of Stamford someone from Australia had posted a thread on "rootsweb:lincsgen" in 2007 which may seem relative to your enquiry. Hope this helps, let me know.

I have assumed of course that the post is not one of yours as the submitters' names seem different.

Warwickshire / Re: Criminal Lunatic Hatton Lunatic Asylum 1900
« on: Friday 06 February 15 15:12 GMT (UK)  »
I often read posts regarding the asylum as I live in a town not too far distant.
My recollection of it when it was in use, often when childen "played up" at home the females of the family would say "you'll have me in Hatton (or Powick) if you carry on like that". I do remember often hearing of one one poor lady who must have suffered from depression, fairly regularly and was referred to as having been taken in again.
I do have a personal slight connection with the place in as much that my mother in the 1950s, used to date  someone who was always known then as a farmer to me (I can remember he bought me a fabulous toy tractor as a present when I was 7 or 8 years old). This must have been around 1954 too long ago for anyone to remember him I expect but when I questioned many years later what happened to him I was told he had been Farm Manager at Hatton but got involved with the "wrong crowd" and was imprisoned for sheep rustling.
It would be interesting to me if anyone could throw any light on the subject. His name was George Gr.......... I can't put the full name in as there is a vague possibility of him being alive of course but could privately email anyone who may have a clue.

Regards

Hello Linda

I wonder if this could be a clue and may need investigating, considering Lutterworth and Stamford and Market Harborough are all not far away from one another.
My Rouse family is connected with a Samuel Rouse who was a draper in Market Harborough (why he moved there I don't know as there seems to be no particular reason) and in c1733 baptised a first son also named Samuel amongst other children. According to my info he died in c1777 and I have no other details for him.
Samuel the elder was born 1705 in Newbold on Stour, parish of Tredington then in Worcestershire now Warwickshire, apprenticed as a Draper being  the son of Nathaniel Rouse who by this time styled himself Gent., his father being an eldest son became well off it seems but his family were Tanners in Newbold on Stour. His Grandfather was a William Rouse who when buried in Tredington in 1663 was described as parish tanner.
I know the family occupation continued as another branch settled in Bicester where they were also Tanners.
The dates of your Samuel would seem to be all right as a son of my Samuel and may explain what happened to his family if he had one.
I hope this is some use to you , if it is let me know. I should be interested to hear what connection you have with the family.

In reply to the original post Eatington is now known as Ettington, Warwickshire. The Shirleys were based there and lived at Ettington Park, the house was modernised in victorian times in a gothic manner  and it is now and has been for some time a hotel. Google it for more info and pictures.

I think it's one of those sites that people subscribe to without any research whatsover, save for poaching others families. I have found details of my antecedents on there that are definitely not related to others of the same name who belong to a titled family. They could have been in the dim & distant past i.e. before it became possible through written records but settled in totally different areas of the country (the Norman invasion etc.)
It's extremely annoying but there is little that can be done, it seems. I usually only try to share my tree with people that I think are genuinly interested but this shows it is easy to make a mistake.

Worcestershire / Re: Halford drowning Shipston on Stour
« on: Thursday 21 July 11 00:31 BST (UK)  »
Hi Bob,

There were lots of Halford families, presumably originally related around the Shipston-on-Stour (Warwickshire) area, some were landowners others not. There is a village called Halford (Warwickshire) about 2 miles away from Shipston and another called Tredington (Warwickshire but previously in Worcestershire) about the same distance away, both had Halfords living in them. There are references to the family in 'UK Archives Online' and there are parish records available online around the area which can tell you a lot about the family.

Hi,

I've just come across this site when searching a name on google. As i have never seen this site before I was rather surprised at the amount of info on it relating to my search. Is it one of those sites where the info is uploaded without extensive research i.e. picked from others' endeavours?
Some of the info had taken me ages to research.
