Im from Chorley so i will go over to Wigan at some point and search the newspapers.

William Griffiths (Ellen's husband) died in 1976 and i cannot find a burial/cremation for him either.

Ellen's death was registered by Willam.

Thanks for all your help xx

The hertiage centre in Wigan have searched Hindley, Lower Ince, Ince Urban, Gidlow,Leigh and the following Churches Orrell St Lukes and Standish St Wilfred's and cannot find her.

I contacted the crem and they confirmed that the crematorium at Wigan did not open until 1955 and they have no record of her.

I havent checked Christ Church, is that the one on Ince Green Lane? Due to their connections with St Mary's and her daughter saying she was buried in Wigan Cemetery i just assumed she would be there.

Sophia Banks nee Chivers was born in Suffolk and Henry Banks was born in Longton. From what i can gather they travelled around quite a bit and didnt stay in Skelmersdale too long. They seemed to settle in Ince.

I havent tried the newspapers, im not sure where i would go to look at those from 1950 in Wigan. I will have a search online and see if i can see anthing re papers.

Thanks

Jemma

Hi CaroleW

Yes ive spent two cold days walking round the cemetery reading stones but no luck.

The cemeteries for all of Wigan have confirmed that they have no record of her :-(

Even graves without headstones are listed on the Wigan World site but nothing for Ellen.

I have also concentrated my search in the areas furthest from the gates with no luck.

I think im just going to have to accept that i wont find her.

Lancashire / Help! I cant find Ellen Griffiths! (Ince.Wigan)

Hello

I have been looking for the final resting place of my great great grandma for the last six months without any luck.

Born Ellen Banks in 1887 in Skelmersdale she then moved with her parents to Ince in Wigan.

From what i can gather from Wigan World and St Marys early Parish Magazines, Ellen and her mother and father, Henry and Sophia Banks we active members of the church.

In 1908 Ellen Banks married William Ince Wilson, they had 4 children and sadly William died aged 31 in 1918.

Ellen then married James Lucas in 1920. Sadly James Lucas died in 1926.

Ellen married for the final time in 1928 to William Griffiths and they had a daughter in 1931.

Ellen died on 7 September 1950 at Billinge Hospital.

Sophia Banks died in 1928 and her burial is mentioned in the St Marys Ince Parish Magazine

Henry Banks died in 1938.

As they were members of St Mary's and this was their local church i assumed they would be buried in either Ince Cemetery or Wigan Lower Ince Cemetery. Looking on the Wigan World Website i cannot find any trace of them. I have contacted Wigan Heritage/History and they have searched all the grave/cremation records and cannot find any trace of any of them!

Surely they have to be somewhere and there should be a record of them?!

With Sophia Banks burial being listed in the St Mary's magazine i would have thought she would be buried there?  ???

There is a burial for James Lucas in the Parish Magazine and i have managed to find his grave.

I have spoken to Ellen's surviving daughter and she remembers her mum being buried in Wigan Cemetery 'furthest away from the gates'.

I really dont want to give up on this but im very stuck as to what to try next. :'(

Any help or information would be very much appreciated.

Thank you in advance

Hi All

Does anyone have or know where i can look to find out about the Whiston (Lancashire)Colliery fire in 1806. I have discovered the burial record for Henry Lawrenson in 1806 and it says he died in a colliery fire at Whiston.

Any help is very much appreciated.

Thankyou in advance

Also the Richard Hughes the Bootmaker (Jane Williams nee Hughes dad) lives at 11 Blake Street in 1881 and 1871. The birth certificate i have for Catherine shows she was born at 11 Blake Street in 1873 so i think im on the right track but there is just no sign of Catherine and her parents at Blake Street

Hi Teaurn

Thanks for looking for me, i did look at that one but had previously discounted it due to her not being there and there being another child born in 1873....

Its certainly a tough one.

I have managed to find a John and Jane Williams with a father in law living with them called Richard Hughes in 1891  Source Citation:  Class: RG12; Piece: 2913; Folio 129; Page 18; GSU roll: 6098023.

I found a John Williams and Jane Hughes marriage certificate for the year before Catherine was born (just a guess its them really) and the father of Jane was Richard Hughes a Boot Maker so this cert fits with this census but no sign of Catherine.

Thanks for looking for me x

Hi

I have been trying to find my Great Great Grandma on the 1881 and 1891 census and so far it is proving impossible.

I have her sons birth certificate (my great grandad) and this shows him born in Liverpool (West Derby) on 14 January 1896 to James Jackson (a Coal Carter) and Catherine Jackson nee Williams.

I then managed to find them on the 1911 census and the 1901 census living on Blucher Street in Liverpool. I then got a copy of their marriage certificate showing Catherine Williams marrying James Jackson on 25 March 1894 in Liverpool. Her father is shown as John Williams and his profession is listed as Brick Maker. Catherine is listed as living on Trowbridge Street, Liverpool at the time of marriage.

The marriage certificate shows James Jackson her husband living at Blake Street Liverpool at the time of marriage.

I then worked out that Catherine Williams must have been born around 1873 and so requested a search from GRO for a birth certificate from 1872 to 1874 with a father of John Williams.

I have now received a certificate and this shows a Catherine Williams born 26 August 1873 at 11 Blake Street Liverpool to a father John Williams ( a Painter) and a mother Jane Williams nee Hughes.

I have tried looking for Catherine Williams in 1881 and 1891 but am having no luck at all.

Please can anyone help with either a census look up or any other tips/advice?

Thank you in advance

Jemma  :)
