Hi All

Lucky enough to be heading to Ireland today!  Will watch the Irish beat the Wallabies (as the only kiwi in the group going I have to say that) in Dublin and will then head up to Limmerick and Tipperary to do some research - especially Winifred and George  Moran (their son Daniel married Lucy Ryan), Ryans and Gubbins.  If anyone has particular research centres, churches or people they can recommend please let me know.

Regards
Mary

Hello All....

Not sure that this fits in with your dates but it may help explain the Gubbins and Ryan connection.  John Ryan (Landowner of Cross House, Parish of Pallas) married Ann Gubbins (sometimes written Anne).  They had 5 kids before Ann died.  Ann is buried in the Oola cemetery in Ireland.  I have visited her grave as well as the house where they and the family lived before leaving for the Australian goldfields - Bendigo Creek, later named Sandhurst and then Bendigo.  The 5 kids were Laurence Gubbins, Edmund Gubbins, Lucy, John Gubbins and Robert Gubbins.  The father John remarried in Bendigo but I have no further details of him recorded.  I have birth / death dates for Edmund as 1861 to 1884 but given the death date and place is the same as that provided by Ryan Researcher I am thinking 1861 has to be an incorrect birth date.  He married the sister of a Mrs Haslett.  One of their descendents recently wrote a book in NZ about the Ryans.  I am heading back to NZ (currently working in Canada) at Christmas and can probably get my hands on her email address, if anyone wants it.  I think she charges for printing but not much more (say $20?)...going by memory.

John and Ann's daughter Lucy married a Daniel Moran in Sandhurst and they along with Lucy's brothers all followed the gold rush to Central Otago.  Most the boys went into the bar trade - Laurence running the Bendigo Hotel in Alexandra.

Lucy and Daniel are my great grandparents and my family still run the farm in Central Otago that they established after the golf rush.  Lucy and Daniel are buried in the Drybread cemetery.  The Morans and Ryans remain close - so much so that we have had combined family reunions....the next one scheduled for 2012 in Central Otago.

Regards
Mary Moran
