will send a pm......noted your surname spelling!!  Mike
Hi Mike , The spelling of the family name changed with my Great Grandfather, Ernest Richard, son of William Humphreys. The spelling of his name , fluctuated between Humphreys and Humphries, all through his life, on all official documents. The spelling finally sticking with Humphries for all his descendants.

Had a link to a ancestry site over the weekend and knowing diddly about my fathers side of the family....(divorce etc) I thought I'd have a bash.
Little did I know that Charles as a young copper from Newport Staffs would leave as a young man and settle near Panteg and marry a local girl Hannah Williams in the mid 1850's.
I have sort of traced their family and found that their eldest Thomas was instgrumental in the WW1 memorial in Panteg, with his eldest Walter dying in nov 1918 just b4 the end....bugger. His younger brother  Percy DCM MM died and is buried in Egypt 1921.
Thomas had 7/8 kids and he is my Great GD.
So..............I am searching for anything and everything on anyone............

Cheers

Hi Mike, Just came across your interest in Charles Humphreys (1829-1912). I have a lot of info on him, as Charles was a younger brother of my Great Great Grandfather William Humphreys.
Charles parents were James and Dorothy. He married Susanah(Hannah) Williams 22nd Nov 1852. They had 10 children. Charles was born in 1829, in what was then known as Aston under Edgmond better known today as Church Aston which is about 5 miles from Newport Shropshire. Charles had 3 brothers and 3 sisters, Joseph(1822-1900) , William (1825-1865), Elizabeth (1827-) , Mary (1831) ,Frances (1834)  and James (1835).
One of Charles children, Thomas , married Margaret Ann Francis , they had 9 children. Two of those children Walter (1888) and Percy (1891) were born in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa when Charles was stationed there , that is why he could not be found on the UK Census for 1891. I could go on for longer , but please let me know if you need something specific. All the Best, Gary Humphries

Shropshire / Re: PUGH. Bishop's Castle & area, early census
« on: Saturday 03 October 09 16:36 BST (UK)  »
I hope someone may be able to help. I'm seeking information on the Pugh family of Bishop's Castle (possibly with other districts local to BC).

As far as I can make out, the family were as follows:

Richard & Elizabeth Pugh:
Children:
Richard, 1805/6.
Thomas, 1814.
Sarah 1815 (died in infancy).
Sarah, 1816. Jane 1820.
Most or all of these children were born in Bishop's Castle.

I think the son, Richard, had a wife, Ann, as they lived next door to Thomas' wife in a later census and had the same profession as Thomas (Coachman).

The names of the parents are an educated guess, having found the sister, Sarah, living with thomas' wife... and then running an IGI search (which is how I found all the others bar Richard).

Thomas married Hannah Padmore in 1832 in High Ercall, and they had their children in Bishop's Castle:
John Richard Pugh, 1840
Alice Pugh 1843
Twins Lucy & Margaret Pugh, 1845
Thomas Pugh, 1847/48
James Pugh 1850
Rose Pugh 1854

If anyone can give me some clues about this family prior to 1871, I would be very grateful. I am keen to establish confirmation of some of the relatives, particularly the siblings and parents of Thomas, and any occupations not yet established. Obviously the main area of interest is in the census returns of 1861 & earlier, but anything which might add information would be much appreciated.

Apart from the probable brother, Richard, and his wife, Ann.. I have no details of spouses of Thomas' siblings (Sarah & Jane).

Can anyone help?

Just a snippet of info for you, a Sarah Pugh was present at the death of my gg grandfather, William Humphreys according to his Death Cert. He died aged 40, in October 1865 in Bishops Castle. He was Relieving Officer for the poor in Bishops Castle. I believe at the time he was living in Church Street, Bishops Castle
