One Name Studies: N to S / Re: ROBIN Family of Glasgow, Scotland
« on: Tuesday 07 January 20 20:09 GMT (UK)  »
Hello, I have so many documents and so many files. I also have a will that mentions my great-grandmother Jane Neilson she was taken care of with her uncles as executors. If I can find it I try and put a clip from the hand written copies that I received via Scotlands People dot gov.
I found the link for the video clip on the memorial. Always had trouble with transferring stuff on this web site. https://glasgowancestry.blogspot.com/2009/02/neilson-family-ancestry-gorbals.html

OH! I should have checked my post. Correction: My great-grandmother Jane Neilson was born in the year 1851. Her mother Catherine Twaddle Neilson died in the year 1854. ~k I wrote a long explanation and it did not post. ~k Well sorry I'm not rewriting it. Anyway I'm not sure who the Catherine Twaddle Neilson you found. I have what I wrote but  copied but can't seem to transfer to this page from my MacBook laptop.

We all have similar stories to tell. It just gives proof that we must keep going forward and never give up. Something will always pop up when you least expect. That 'ah ha' or 'oh! my goodness' moment. :)

Oh that's wonderful and especially so that the cemetery office were so helpful.  Unfortunately, the posting of images is disabled on the "lookup requests" board to prevent people posting images of copyrighted items.  Images can be posted on the other boards without problem.  Hope you settle well into your new home.

Casalguidi :)

Hello Casalguidi,

It is amazing that after all these years piecing little clues leads us on to great findings.  8) Thank goodness to sites and people like you who contribute to all our searches. Thank you! Yes, the person that received my e-mail at the cemetery office went the extra mile. She was the manager and I think she actually went down or up to where ever the old ledgers are kept, pulled the box, and thumbed through the dusty sixty years plus old log to find the entry. The response my cousin got months earlier was a wordy e-mail reply so I feel that person just did not take the effort to get up from their seat at the computer. (Only guessing I maybe wrong.) ::)

It's always nice to have a somewhat resolved ending. The next chapter will be when my cousin actually gets to go and visit his father's grave. He lives in Australia, his son is getting married in December so maybe sometime after that he will arrange a trip to the UK.
Thanks again,
Karola   :)

Did you manage to resolve this query ???

Casalguidi :)
Hello,
Yes! After getting a clue from a distant relative I found out that my Uncle was buried in Tottenham.
My cousin contacted the cemetery but was informed that no records were found. However after several months I decide to contact them myself and low-and-behold. Two days later I received an answer that yes their was a record and plot number. His plot was located in the Northern Section off of Hart Lane of the Tottenham Cemetery. Then as I was looking through some old things that had been put in storage I found a box of photographs. My son was handing them to me and he said Mom look at this! The photo was of the plot of my Uncle. Lesson learned never give up looking and don't accept no for answer.

My cousin has plans some to in the future to return to the UK and visit his father's grave.
I have not been very active in the last months with my genealogy searches. Maybe after the things settle down here I will start again. What I mean is that I have just moved from Southern California to Oregon. So my things are all upside down. :)  Down sizing is so stressful! I also need to get myself a photo scanner to preserve some my my old photos.
So There can be a happy ending in genealogy. It is great searching for our roots. I'm thankful for all the encouragement, inspiration, and help that I have received.
Thanks for asking about my progress your post has given me a nudge to get going again!:)

So Hello from Oregon! :)

 ??? I have been trying to post the old photo of the head stone but I can't figure out how to post it here. :(

Hello Dawn,

Yes, I have heard of such happenings.  I was thinking that if the grave is over a certain age or time factor that it is or can be reclaimed by the 'cemetery'. Especially if there are no relatives etc.  Your information although sad is a sobering thought.  :(

Thanks for your contribution,
K

Hi there K,
Sadly my grandparents never had a headstone on the grave in the first place, family issues as to who would do it I think, and they never ended up getting one at all ! I am currently investigating who the registered owner of the grave is, if I can take legal ownership of it, then I can begin the necessary steps to get a headstone put on there for them.

Good luck. This researching is a daunting venture.  Not to be negative but be fore warned about any untoward expenses that might have accrued over the years. I read one story of some one who were charged high costs to upkeep or restore a headstone that was not even their family's lot. Not sure where you are located. It is hard to deal with transactions from overseas. Although I did have good luck in some cases but it has taken 'time' just to find out this information . Like my cousin said to me some six months ago "I can't wait for records to be released I'll be dead by then!"  He is about six years older than me.  I live in California and he lives in Brisbane, Queensland, AU. My cousin never really knew his father since his father and mother separated then he died and his mother died in 1960. Too many miles apart and the last time we met was over 40 years ago!  Well all families have stories to tell. ::)
Keep in touch! If I find any new information I will post here. I have met many interesting people in this search for ancestors. My son thinks it is silly but he will one day see what becomes important and interesting as you get older. I have compiled a nice family tree so when his future someday children ask him about family he will have all my searches.  :)

Here is a sweet poem I found online:

* * * * * * Your Headstone stands among the rest,
* * * * * * Neglected and alone
* * * * * * The name and date are chiseled out
* * * * * * On polished, marble stone.

* * * * * * It reaches out to all who care
* * * * * * It is to late to mourn.
* * * * * * You did not know that I exist
* * * * * * You died and I was born.

* * * * * * Yet each of us are cells of you
* * * * * * In flesh, in blood, in bone.
* * * * * * Our hearts contract and beats a pulse
* * * * * * Entirely not are own.

* * * * * * Dear ancestor the place you filled
* * * * * * One hundred years ago
* * * * * * Spreads out among the ones you left
* * * * * * Who would have loved you so.

* * * * * * I wonder if you lived and loved,
* * * * * * I wonder if you knew
* * * * * * That someday i would find this spot
* * * * * * And come to pay my respects to you.

My grandparents are buried in the Northern Section of Tottenham Cemetery too, but they do not have a headstone there-so be prepared, especially as you all live so far away, and is quite some journey, it would be awful if you get there expecting to find a stone and there is nothing, as happened in our case, and is quite common.
You feel somehow so desolate looking at open ground !

Good luck, and I hope that you find what you are looking for.
Hello,
Thank you for responding with your information.
Yes it can be difficult living so far away and not being able to take extended trips to find the actual site. My Uncle was buried there in 1953. I have vague memories visiting the grave at one time with my grandmother before we came to the US. There was a curb stone and a headstone. So I would assume that there should be something left unless it has been vandalised, fallen over or in an area that is not maintained or abandoned.

Did your grandparents ever have a head stone was it removed or moved? How many years ago was that? I know in some of the very old cemeteries unfortunately there has been much vandalism or reconstruction. Sad! In some very old cemeteries head stones have deteriorated to the point of no recognition. This is all very disappointing! However I have hope that Tottenham is somewhat still an active cemetery and what I have read it is set up as a park. On another note my grandparents are buried at the Eastern Necropolis and Janefield in Glasgow, Scotland. I have no hope of going there to visit my traveling days are over due to severe arthritis. I have read that the cemetery at the Eastern Necropolis  is run down  which has the Celtic stadium next to it. From photos I see that it is a shame.

My cousin who's father is buried at Tottenham will go there sometime in the future. We have searched for years just to find which cemetery that he was buried in. In some ways just knowing where he is is a comfort for the time being.

Thank you again for your input.

P.S. I just reread this thread and realized I did not include the grave site information: Tottenham Cemetery White Hart Lane Northern Section Grave #10814 Arthur John Robin (20 Mar 1915-24 Apr 1953) British Merchant Navy
