Many thanks for that - it explains why I couldn't find it. I definitely need new glasses!

So is St Sidwells a district of St Sorrells in Exeter? This is what I'm trying to decipher

Devon / St Sorrells, Exeter

Can someone tell where this is - or was? Is it a district around a church, a suburb, an area? I'm particularly looking for Paris Street, St Sorrells

Thank you very much! And, yes, I'm an idiot,  :-[ Didn't realise the green scroll allowed me to send a personal email to a forum poster. That'll teach me to read all the instructions!

Can I make a plea for the greyed-out area where the personal email address is not to be quite so greyed out? My old eyes are not what they were, and I'm having to guess a lot of the time what the email address might be :(

Sutherland / Re: Gunn. Sutherland, Scotland. Research request.
« on: Monday 18 October 10 14:46 BST (UK)  »
Gunn as a family name is more commonly found in Caithness rather than Sutherland. There's Neil M Gunn, for example, a famous Scottish novelist from the Lybster area, but you'll really need to get some Christian names or you're not going to be able to get very far without getting into a terrible tangle.

The Lighter Side / Barrie's Trip Edinburgh
« on: Sunday 17 October 10 17:57 BST (UK)  »
When I was a little girl my mother used to sing a song, and the only words I can remember are
'I'm no goin on Barrie's trip
I'm no going at all
I'm no goin on Barrie's trip
Because it always comes on rain'
I remember asking her about it, and all she could remember was that she thought it was a Church organised/or council organised trip for poor children which happened once a year in Edinburgh, but who Mr Barrie/Barry was, or if there was even a Mr Barry, she didn't know. I'd love to know if anyone recognises/remembers the song, and tell me more about it

Sutherland / Re: Doctor Fenton in Lairg
« on: Sunday 17 October 10 17:52 BST (UK)  »
Have you tried writing to the editor of The Northern Times? It's published in Golspie - the address would be
The Editor
Northern Times
High Street
Golspie
Sutherland.
They print snippets of history from over one hundred years, and a 'local' doctor going to South Africa would have made news. Perhaps also an enquiry to Lairg Health Centre, High Street, Lairg, Sutherland, would get you somewhere. Dr Dickson who worked there for over forty years has only just retired, and he might know someone he can put you in touch with so if you wrote to him c/o the practice I'm sure you would get a reply. Lairg is a very small place, and everyone knows everyone so you have a very good chance of finding someone who can help

Midlothian / Anyone else researching the Kerr/Pryde family?
« on: Monday 04 October 10 09:58 BST (UK)  »
My great grandmother is a descendant of this family from Isobella Pryde, Helen Kerr and William Pryde's daughter, born in 1818, who married a James McKinlay/Kinlay in 1838, and it's their daughter Janet who was my great grandmother. Has anyone firmly established that Helen was the daughter of Mungo Kerr, born in 1764 at a place called Hawthorne, Lasswade, Midlothian, who was married to Isobel Penman, born similarly in Lasswade in 1764? If I have the correct Mungo Kerr then his father was William Kerr and his mother was Janet Wilson. William and Janet had a lot of children.
Mungo Kerr 1764 Lasswade
Elizabeth Kerr 1766 Lasswade
Thomas Kerr 1769 Lasswade
Archibald Kerr 1771 Lasswade m. Helen Lilley
Helen Kerr 1773 Lasswade
William Kerr 1773 Lasswade
George Kerr 1775 Lasswade
Andrew Kerr 1777 Lasswade m. Marion Selkirk
Elizabeth Kerr 1779 Lasswade
Isabella Kerr 1781 Temple
Unfortunately, there seem to be a lot of Kerrs in this area - all with similar Christian names - so I'm not sure if I've gone off on the wrong family line, or the correct one, so if anyone else is researching this family I'd be grateful for any input/correction
