Actually, yes. My 1st cousin, twice removed was Richard Lewis McGregor (1886-1973). Who?
He was born in Scotland and due to a powerful and God-fearing mother he went to agricultural college. He went to Australia and soon became a government agricultural expert. During WW2 he was in charge of supplying food to the Allied troops and later became Australian ambassador to Canada. He later became a US citizen and lived in Barbados. In 1966 he welcomed the Queen on her visit to Barbados. My father was named George Lewis  and my nephew is also Lewis.

United States of America / California divorce
« on: Thursday 10 July 14 11:28 BST (UK)  »
Eugenie Magnus (1874-1936) went to the US in 1911. She was married in 1896 to Fred W Watkins (aka Fred Leonard) who did not accompany her. In about 1913 she lived with George Ingleton until his death in 1926 in California. They were both involved in the early film industry. In 1929 she married S F Hogue, editor of the San Francisco Globe.
There is no evidence she married George Ingleton. Yet she married S Hogue. Did she divorce her first husband in England or the US? Where can I find these divorce papers? :'(

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / 1871 Hackney

I'm trying to find 39 Shrubland Road, Hackney or Dalston in the 1871 census. I've found 104-91 and 1-11 but 39 must be somewhere else. I've found them on RG10 323. I have looked in the index on Ancestry but my person is not noted. I know he was there since his address is noted on his uncle's will in January 1871.

My 4x grandfather, who came from Stoke-by-Nayland, Suffolk/Essex married John Constable's sister. Personally, I can't paint a wall.

The Common Room / Re: Died of Smallpox 1877 epidemic? DONE

A couple of my ancestors died about that time - sisters but several years apart. As far as I've read there were several outbreaks of Typhoid and smallpox during the 19th century due to infected water and poor living conditions. According to various references both deseases are similar and come from the same source. Once the government decided to clean up the water in LOndon the deseases became a thing of the past. The outbreaks, from 1826, were mainly confined to ports on the southcoast and London which implies they came in on boats from the continent or further afield. Deptford appeared to have been badly affected as were Dover and Margate. The last oubreak appeared to have been in 1866 but there were further smaller outbreaks in the 1870s.

One of my distant granfathers was married in Stoke-by-Nayland in Suffolk and in the same week as John Constable, the artist. I later found that his son married a girl named Constable. Who knows?

Also my father was named Lewis after a cousin, Lewis McGregor who was the Australian ambassador to the League of Nations in WW2. He later became US ambassador to Barbados. My nephew is also named Lewis. I read Lewis McGregor's autobiography a few years ago - it was better than a sleeping pill.
