Thanks so much for your help LisaJB, Sugarbakers. Emeltom and Jen B
Once you say Waitress I can see it. I'm not sure who she was waitressing on - presumably it would be the staff  :)

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Daughter's occupation?
« on: Saturday 04 April 20 13:53 BST (UK)  »
Hi, not managed to get on Rootschat for some time now, but as I've been quarantined to home for 12 weeks thought I would resume my favourite hobby.
I have eventually found 2 members of my missing family in the 1841 census, both working at Lancaster Castle. Mum Cecelia is recorded as Matron (which ties in with other evidence I have) Daughter Charlotte is also there, but I cannot make out her occupation.
Help please  :)
Keep safe everyone

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / House inscription - please advise!
« on: Thursday 12 September 19 19:48 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I've been asked to help interpret this writing on the eaves of a house in the Lancashire countryside. I thought it might be in Latin, and there may be Lancashire roses or ships anchors, but just can't work it out. It is definitely not the name of the house or any family who has lived in it.
Any help or ideas would be gratefully received by me and the new owner of the house.

Fascinating map - think you're right about those houses to the east.

I'm told that a photo of General's Row was used for Orwell's "Road to Wigan Pier"
Hi Mark - I've googled illustrations from the book and the Generals Row photo was used in the original book. He didn't select the pictures but he did approve them before publication. Facinating stuff, thank you.

Hi McBroom155, welcome to Rootschat. If your Mary Hoey was from the Craigneuk or Wishaw area I may be able to help. Please don't post info on any living persons though.
Kind regards
Paula
