Yorkshire (West Riding) / Re: Thewlis. Hinchliffe Mill/Holmfirh

Thanks for the info, Susan.
I'll try to match it to what I have already.

What I am trying to do in fact is to find a family link between Dora Thewlis, suffragette, and Alfred Thewlis who was living in Slaithwaite during the first half of the 20th century.

Joshua and Jonathan were their grtgrndfathers, both coming from Hinchliffe Mill area, and it would be good to firmly establish that the 2 men were brothers or at least related , and thence Dora and Alfred, albeit distantly.

Thanks for this, Trish.
I hadn't spotted the Jonan. for Jonathan!

Not sure if it the same father as Joshua but must be part of the extended Thewlis clan who lived at Hinchliffe Mill. ( the Place Name on the bap. document looks like an attempt to spell it. And it is in the official Almonbury parish, so in the correct location up the Holme valley)

Am wondering if Mally was John's second wife. Will pursue this.

Thanks again.

I am trying to confirm a family link - preferably brothers - between two men who lived in the Hinchliffe Mill/ Cartworth Fold area just outside of Holmfirth.

Joshua Thewlis b. about 1793 to John and Esther ( have found the baptism record)
and
Jonathan Thewlis b. about 1801. I have failed to find any baptism or birth record which would help to  prove that the two men were brothers. He appears in the 1841 census married to Mary plus children.
But I can find no further info.

Any help would be appreciated. I feel sure they are somehow related, there being quite a scattering of Thewlis's in Hinchliffe Mill all through the 1700 and 1800's.

Thanks in advance,

A quick foray on Anc**try has revealed where-he-got-the-brass and the source of the name Bute terrace:
John Jagger m'd Annie Marshall. Her father Soloman was stone merchant, formerly a quarry labourer, started to 'do well' sometime  from 1881-1891. I think we can deduce that the Marshall father-in-law helped JJ go into the building  business, from being a joiner, sometime early 1900's. Hence the houses in Mona St/Bute Ter.

The name Bute terr and the Marshall residence in Brighouse - Oban house- owe their Scottish names to Soloman's wife Sarah who was b. Scotland/ Glasgow/ Kilmarnoch. Maybe Mona also has a Celtic link.

Allan,
Thanks for the detailed reply.
It looks as if the Jaggers might have been living briefly in Bute Terrace/Mona st when their twins

John Jagger was the builder who built the row of shops in Carr Lane, Slaithwaite. The shops celebrate their centenary this year and a small research project is under way into the history of the shops.
A look at the original owner and builder seems useful to give a bit of background to the findings.

I have just gone up to Mona Street to look at the houses. I had hoped there might be some small decorative features like the ones on the shops. However, the houses are all unadorned.
The buildings housing shops in Carr Lane have interesting and perhaps unexpected columnar stone 'swags' and, until the 1970's, sported large stone finial-like decorations on the roof.

As regards John Jagger, the interesting question is where did he get his money from to start his building enterprise. He did marry into The Marshalls ( well-known in the buiding trade), who in turn started out as labourers. A story of families making good, I'd say.

Thanks again.

Thanks Rosie99.
It is John Jagger builder that I am looking into. His twin sons were born at Bute terrace despite the  fact that the family was from Brighouse.
| am trying to find out if they lived at Bute terrace or just owned it or were staying there when the birth happened.
Any further info much appreciated.
Could I ask where you found the report of the house sale?

Can anyone tell me where Bute Terrace was/is in Slaithwaite?
I have it as the address on a birth certificate in 1908.
It might not be a whole long terrace of houses. It could just have been a group of 2 or 3.
Thanks in advance for any replies.

Sussex / Re: children's home, Shoreham
« on: Monday 03 February 25 08:32 GMT (UK)  »
I'm glad to see that this post is still active.
My uncle, who was at the Shoreham childrens home prior to evacuation to West Yorkshire, passed away some time ago.
I will look at the brief account of his experiences which he gave me and see if any names ring a bell.

Bernard, could I ask if you recall where you were evacuated to in Yorkshire?

My uncle was sent with a group of children to Dunford Bridge near Penistone and Holmfirth. He was billetted with my father's family, never "reclaimed" and stayed as a foster child, eventually making a good life for himself here in West Yorkshire.

Yes, I had the impression that the Amsterdam was more of an entertainment venue than just a bar. And the owners apparently had several other clubs.
Thanks for replies.
