Yorkshire (West Riding) / Re: Barnsley Pit - EDIT Anyone recognise a relative ?

Hi,

Colliers from my family in Lancashire went over to work in pits in the Barnsley area in the 1860s and 70s (Edmund and Henry Brierley) living in Ardsley and Worsbrough at the time . Is there any way I can find at which pit they were at?

John

Hi again,

Following Luzzu's suggestion I contacted the Lancashire Record Office. They question whether John Hilton was local to the Shaw/Ogden area if he was on active service there at the time. Apparently conscripts did not normally spend time on active service in the county they came from. So if he was posted to the area he would have come from somewhere else. If he was local he would not have been on active service whilst he was in the area.

If he was local he would probably have been in the 5th Regiment of The Royal Lancashire Militia which recruited from the Oldham area.

If he was posted to the area and was therefore in some other militia regiment his records would either be in the area he was conscripted from or in the national archives.

It might be possible to find out which militia regiments were in the area in 1810 by browsing 19th century newspapers at the local library or for a fee on-line at http://newspapers.bl.uk/blcs/.

Any further suggestions welcome.

Hi

My wife's great grandmother was a Maud Wolff (may be a variation on the spelling) who in turn was the grand-daughter of a Willemina Wolff from Amsterdam. The family came to England in the late 1870s(?) and were living in Lambeth in 1881. The family later moved to Camberwell. They worked in shipping, warehousing and furnishings.

Any use?

Thanks for that. I’ve had a look at the GMRCO Militia Records. They appear to cover the recruitment into the militia for the hostilities with France from 1778 until their disembodiment in March 1783. These records do include a John Hilton (listed as a 16 year old collier from Oldham who joined up on 3rd August 1779).

If this John Hilton was my Great great great grandfather he would have been 47 when my Great great grandfather William was conceived with the 20 year old Esther Brearley/Brierley.

Although not out of the question it is more likely that the John Hilton I’m seeking was in one of the later recruitments/embodiments 1793 (Preston) or 1803.

Does anyone have access to these list?

Lancashire / John Hilton Militia Man 1810
« on: Saturday 10 October 09 13:26 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to get a lead on a John Hilton from the Shaw/Newhey area. He was a militia man and fathered a child in 1810(William-my great great grandfather) by a Esther Brearley/Brierley. The child was baptised at Ogden Particular Baptist Church in 1811. They didn't marry and it looks like Esther died in 1814 and was buried at Shaw Chapel.

Has anyone please got any suggestions on how I can track this John Hilton. Hilton is a common local name amongst the weavers of this area and so there are numerous John Hiltons.

Lancs OPC is a brilliant site but has some gaps. One gap I'm particularly interested in is Shaw Chapel Baptism Records 1800-1813. Does anyone know how I can access these?

Did you get a lead on your James Brierley? If he wasn't baptised until the Spring following his birth in August  (which wasn't uncommon) he could be the son of Samuel (a Weaver) and Hannah Brierley of Hermitage whose son James was baptised at Shaw Chapel (Crompton) on 2nd March 1792. The record is on the Lancashire On-line Parish Clerk Project site being taken from the Bishops Transcripts for baptisms 1790-1799.

Hi - I have a similar query. Simpson Hill House was/is a large house in Heywood which was sold at the end of the 19th Century.

My Aunt gave birth unmarried at the age of 16 in 1924. Her son's birth certificate gives his place of birth as Simpson Hill and his residence six weeks later (when the birth was registered) as the same. My Aunt's address is however given as the family home (Cowlishaw Lane, Shaw).

Could Simpson Hill have been some sort of home/maternity hospital for young single mums?
