FH Documents and Artefacts / Re: Abandonned Property - Boston USA

[color=Teal]Oooh…. :D  Thank you both so much for your replies.  That address was actually one of the addresses that I contacted back in 1997 but didn’t get anywhere.  Luckily I printed off all the paperwork from the searches I did back then.  I had no idea that interest might be added!!

I will take a deep breath now and do as you suggest by typing in her last name only.   You know, even though my mother’s dead now, I know she would have the biggest smile on her face if I manage to find it.   Thank you both for your help.  I’ll keep you posted  ;) ;)

FH Documents and Artefacts / Abandonned Property - Boston USA
« on: Monday 18 October 10 13:45 BST (UK)  »
I have question to ask if I may.  In 1997 when I was first connected to the internet I began to look for an “abandoned account” on behalf of my mother.   Her father had set up a savings account in her name in Boston where he was living, I’m guessing this would have been in 1924 or thereabouts but it might have been earlier.  When he died in 1929, an aunt continued to pay into the account for her until it matured on her twenty-first birthday (1936).  My mother, born in Boston in 1915, went to Ireland in 1920 and by the time the ‘policy’ matured, she had moved to London where she was nursing.  She was sent the relevant paperwork in order to put in her claim, but this was lost as she moved from hospital to hospital during the war.

I began to do some searches for her and sent letters out to the Massachusetts Archives, Office of Thrift Supervision and also the Abandoned Property Division.  Sadly, because we don’t have a name for the bank or society where the money was put, no one could help.  The one positive outcome of my writing was that we were told that whatever money had been saved would still be there and belonged to her.

My mother died in 2003 and whilst I’m sure we are only talking about a modest sum, my grandfather and an aunt took the trouble to save that  money for her and so in her memory, I’d still like to find it.

The internet has moved on a great deal since 1997 and I was wondering, with all the archives available, where I should begin my new search.  I am still a bit of a novice but If anyone is able to advise I would be very grateful.   :)

Many thanks.

United States of America / Re: US birth cert/passport? 1920
« on: Friday 15 October 10 10:33 BST (UK)  »
Thank you for your very detailed reply Johnny Boy (my grandfather was John btw).  You have answered quite a few questions that I’ve asked myself down the years.  Since putting my posting on roots chat I have come across details of my grandfather’s naturalization (1902) and his WW1 draft registration (1918).  When he returned to Ireland with the children in 1920, his intention was to remain there with them.  However he returned to the US alone, sometime between 1923-5 from what I remember being told and there he died in 1929.  I am wondering whether he took his children’s birth certificates with him and in 1924 perhaps he had them stamped ready to bring the children back to him.  That sadly never happened for they never saw each other again.  Whatever the dates mean – I love looking at the wonderful birth certificate and I’d like to thank you for trying to help.  I’ll add your information to my research.   :)

United States of America / US birth cert/passport? 1920
« on: Friday 08 October 10 09:02 BST (UK)  »
I have a copy of my mother’s birth certificate – Boston Mass. 1915. Her mother died in 1919 and her father took her and her brother to Ireland arriving Moville 27th April 1920.   I have the Columbia arrival record from New York after someone helped me on Roots chat.  Unable to settle in Ireland however, my grandfather returned to Boston a few years later.  He said he had her ticket and wanted to take her with him and send for her brother later when he had saved enough money.  She said she would wait until he had enough money for them both.  My grandfather died in Jan 1929 and my mother never returned to America.   :'(

My query is: - would the birth certificates have been used as passports do you think?   At the top right hand side is printed Boston ……….. (obviously a space for a date) where both certificates have been stamped with the date Apr – 2 1924  and again on a big official red seal on the front.  The certificates are quite grand looking and hand written, about 23cm x 29cm.   A feint official embossed stamp is on the front with the date July 1929.  I also have a photograph (Trement Street Boston) of my grandfather sitting with the two children which my mother always thought was her passport photo.  Did they need to have a passport photo?   :-\

I am trying to piece all these bits together but have always been stumped by the dates on the certificates.  I’d be very grateful for any clues.  Thanks

Surrey Completed Look up Requests / Re: Irish (surname) family of Frimley
« on: Tuesday 22 June 10 21:12 BST (UK)  »
Hello Debbie,

I have only just spotted your posting (from 05 I think) having typed in Robert Stracey Irish into Google.  I've done it many times before but never came up with anything much.  Marmaduke Irish was my great grandfather and Robert Stracey my gr.gr. grandfather.  I have been looking into the Irish family history for the past year and a distant cousin (a gr.gr. granddaughter of Edwin) and who has managed to take the Irish family right back to 1570.

I would love to hear back from you and see where you fit in - and would be really excited if you were able to fill any gaps for us - as we might be able to do for you.  I look forward to hearing back from you.  :)

The Common Room / Re: Gibraltar records

Thank you for your reply Dawn, I will check that out over the weekend.  I have just started looking into my husband's family history - after 40 years  ::) !

I am living in France  by the way and have just come across a case of old photos and letters.  My husband's father's line has been done (by someone else) but I wanted to look into his mothers side.  I was a bit 'stuck' when I found that the first two children were born in Gibraltar.  Thank you again for replying Dawn, I'm looking forward to seeing what I can find.

The Common Room / Gibraltar records
« on: Wednesday 07 April 10 15:58 BST (UK)  »

I am searching for details of the marriage of an English soldier stationed in Gibraltar in the 1890’s when he married a Gibraltarian there.

Also, I have a copy of the Certificate of the birth on 6th November 1889 of his first born extracted from the Register of Births of the 18 Cy. Eastern Division Royal Artillery registered at the Military Station at Gibraltar.  I believe there were two further children born there later and would like to know how to find these details too.

Who would keep these records (preferably in the UK as I have that Ancestry sub.)  Many thanks for any help  :)

The Common Room / Re: possible illigitimate search

Thank you very much for helping me – I believe I have found him but will check the ‘middle’ name with my friend.  It would seem that he was given his mother’s surname on his birth record even though he knew of his father and that family acknowledged him and offered support when asked.  He always used the ‘inherited’ name of his ‘step-father’ however which was the surname my friend grew up with.  Thank you again for your help   :)

The Common Room / possible illigitimate search
« on: Tuesday 10 November 09 20:59 GMT (UK)  »

Is it possible to find details of a friend’s father born illegitimately London in 1906? My friend would love to see her father’s birth certificate – both her parents are now deceased.  She knows the address where her grandmother was working as a housekeeper when she became pregnant and I know that she went on to settle down with another man after her illegitimate child was born and although she had a daughter with this man and my friends father bore his name she thinks they never married.   I have found her grandmother on 1901 census but that is all and I was hoping someone could give me some idea how to continue the search.
