Limerick / Browne of CastleConnell
« on: Saturday 21 November 09 22:50 GMT (UK)  »
I am searching Brownes in Limerick, and another in Ireland generally
1)   There were Brownes from CastleConnell, Limerick who settled in Hamilton Ontario circa 1835. There were 3 brothers, with birth years, James (> 1814 ?), Michael Wilson (1815/6) and Edward (1819); emigrated 1828, landing in Kingston Ont - presumably with parents, names unknown. Brother James moved on to Toronto, occupation wharfinger. Both his brothers settled in Hamilton, Ont with similar occupations including shipowners, forwarders, agents. I  have learned a lot about them in Canada, and glad to share it. I'd like to know who their parents were, and more about their life in Limerick.
2)    John (my husband's ancestor), born about 1795 in Ireland (no county, but Castlebar, Mayo a possibility)- emigrated to Scotland c 1818. His wife and children  emigrated 1848 to Ontario Canada via NY state (3 yrs). We don't know if John came or not - doubtful. I would love to connect our John with the Hamilton brothers - perhaps a cousin, but have hit a dead end.
All were Protestants, at least in Canada. Any help welcomed, Gail Browne

Thank you so much to "lizdb" for your information. Using your excellent website link, I was able to find 4 miniaturists who worked in Edinburgh at about the relevant time: John Miers (c 1758-1821); Andrew Robertson (1777-1845); Christina (Saunders) Robertson (1796-1854); and Sir Wm Chas Ross RA (1794-1860). I'll do a little more digging on those possibles. Thank you so much, gailmail

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Who Can Identify Scottish cameo artists?
« on: Thursday 01 October 09 23:53 BST (UK)  »
I have copies of four cameos of Picken family, 2 male, 2 female, possibly done in Edinburgh, perhaps circa 1800-1810. The copies are oval, approx 3" x 2". The artist may have included an "S" shaped twist of hair on the reverse. I'd like to know more about dates and artists, gailmail

Lanarkshire / Re: Where is Holms (Holmes) Farm, parish of Avondale?
« on: Sunday 27 September 09 20:36 BST (UK)  »
Time for me to post my family surnames of interest in Lanarkshire: Brown/e: (Barony) Glasgow 1800-1850
Hay and Fyfe: (Barony) Glasgow 1750 ff
Wingfield: (Barony) Glasgow 1800 - 1850
Wingfield and Hamilton: Parishes of Avondale, Blantyre, Hamilton 1700 ff

I've viewed the 1841 census; John Wingfield and children were in Glasgow; his wife Annie (Hamilton) Wingfield was at home of John and Mary (Hamilton) Craig in Holms, Avondale, the same Parish where Annie was married in 1820 at Strathaven. Annie and Mary may have been sisters, but more likely niece and aunt.
Any suggestions welcome, Gail Browne

I came across another source for Strathaven cemetery that does not seem to have been mentioned yet. It is an on-line monuments transcription by Anne Barrie, which is well indexed and user friendly. The path to follow is: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~barrie/
also there is a "click here" for queries. I did that and got her e-mail address, sent her one, but have not heard back. Perhaps it is outdated.
In this document are all (or most) of the names mentioned in this series of letters, including Leiper and Meikle. Very helpful for those of us unable to view the site in person, Gail in Canada

I am new to Roots - and am also very interested in Holms, Glengavel Farm. The 1841 census and Craigs referred to - included Ann (Hamilton)Wingfield, my family ancestor who was born Strathaven 1795, emigrated to Canada.  I feel sure she is related to Mary Craig, not sure just how, but Mary's maiden name was Hamilton, right?
The website I'd like to pass on is Geograph UK for terrific maps; you can see Holms below Drumclog, the Glengavel Water & Reservoir, with photos. The photographer is Gordon Brown, with a link to him - I've 'talked to him' - very helpful. Good luck.
